The Revenge of Magic Monday!

It's time for Magic Monday again, my intermittent open post on occult theory and practice -- so ask me anything about occultism and I'll do my best to answer it. Any question received by midnight tonight Eastern time will get an answer, though it may be Tuesday sometime before I get to them all.
With that said, have at it!

Date: 2018-01-29 07:03 pm (UTC)In the open post of last week, you mentioned that to perform astral projections is not that difficult. Can you resume the technique for me please?
Are there any down side to it or dangers?
Thank You
Re: Travelling on the Astral plane
Date: 2018-01-29 10:45 pm (UTC)The only real dangers you face in doing astral projection are getting too obsessive about it, on the one hand -- it takes a lot of energy to do, and you can exhaust yourself by doing it too much -- and mistaking astral perceptions for absolute truths on the other. I'll be covering that in this week's post on the blog.

From:Can you or a reader identify a book?
Date: 2018-01-29 07:04 pm (UTC)For many years I've been looking for a book that my town library had in the mid-1980s. Given the breadth of your knowledge of literature, I'm hoping you (or perhaps another reader) might be able to identify it. The book was at least partly on the subject of a magical household. It had a chapter entitled "The Witch's Garden" or something similar, with nifty little diagrams as seen in gardening books of herbal and woody plantings for a magically inclined cottage garden, possibly printed in brown ink (though I may have confabulated that part over the years). I recall it as being a very large-format, but fairly thin, paperback. I'm pretty sure it was not one of Scott Cunningham's books. I will be very grateful for any suggestions. Thanks very much,
Dewey

From:Learning Ritual Magic
Date: 2018-01-29 09:04 pm (UTC)I just got Learning Ritual Magic and I'm about to start doing the practices. I go once a week to ashtanga yoga classes mainly for physical exercise. Is that a problem with the magical training?
Also English is not my native language. Do I translate the rituals myself, perform them in English or find more official translations in my own language?
Thanks in advance!

Date: 2018-01-29 10:16 pm (UTC)On your other blog, a commenter brought up the Watcher at the Threshold, which was the first time I'd seen the term, and I was wondering if you could speak more about it.
Is it a fairly common phenomenon? I've been slowly working through the Druid Magic Handbook for about two years now, and I have a hunch that I've encountered a version of the Watcher - but I don't want to get cocky.

Date: 2018-01-29 11:09 pm (UTC)About 2 years ago I adopted as best I could a ritual observance from your book, which I had to hand, Gnostic Celtic Church. This ritual seemed to generate protection for 'our grove', that is our family & dog, and our large plot with trees and other inhabitants. From the beginning I extended the Grove mostly to family scattered elsewhere in Britain.
I became aware from comments on your blogs that this ritual was different from the full Sphere of Protection available elsewhere, but persevered anyway with the /E/W/S/N visualization and with drawing down the vertical influence from the 'Sun', meeting the tellurium (?) moon influence from the Earth. Despite my personalized version - I still need my own approximate visualization - there seems, if very gradually, to be some help available. More recently 'the sun' seems to have helped specifically in a difficult repetitive dream - for which thanks. In a roundabout way the family connections have been worth attending to, including appreciation of some deceased members in particular an appreciation of my parents.
My question is really about the value of this rather limited exercise versus the perhaps more detailed other version(s), and the usefulness of my extending 'our grove' beyond the immediate location. I can easily visualize people creatures and locations, past and present.

Date: 2018-01-30 01:29 am (UTC)2. Dealing with doubt. There’s apparently a phenomenon where if you stand on the edge of a cliff, you get intrusive thoughts like „I could definitely just jump off; what’s stopping me.” Sometimes, I get these sudden thoughts that magic isn’t real, or I get impious thoughts about the existence of the Gods. But then I shake my head realize the absurdity of those thoughts and go on my way. But their intrusiveness is unnerving. Doesn’t happen often, though. What’s going on here? Is it a holdover from my atheist past?
I know it’s a lot to ask, but I have to say I keep going back to my most favorite book of yours: A world full of Gods. Really happy I got it signed by you last year; just wish it was a bit longer ;)
Thanks for doing these magic mondays!

Date: 2018-01-31 02:01 am (UTC)Saturn Return/Perceptions
Date: 2018-01-30 01:32 am (UTC)My second Saturn Return started a couple weeks ago, and in that time an ancestral grandfather has made himself known to me, and I am grateful for that. My sense of myself seems also to expand several feet out from time to time, so it feels like I’m sort of watching myself from a distance. What may be up with that? And, as has been happening ever since I was initiated into Reiki II over a year ago, I feel the presence of several types of animals at various times of the day, generally around my SOP/meditation time in the morning, and distance Reiki time at night. I’m very fond of these animals, but haven’t a clue what they may be, other than my imagination. Anyway, I enjoy the sense of their presence, and thank them for coming. I’ve followed you long enough, though, to know there may be more to the story. As always, your insights are much appreciated.

Date: 2018-01-30 02:59 am (UTC)In their original languages, were the names of gods and spirits also the word for what they represent/are made up of? If 'Zeus' was the word for sky, that would be a simplistic example of what I mean.
I know, this is way too general and cultures and languages and pantheons vary. But I imagine whatever you say will be interesting.

Date: 2018-01-30 07:11 am (UTC)The subject of ghosts came up on my blog and I was wondering whether peoples reactions to ghosts were different at points in the past than they are today? I became curious because one account described sisters trying to talk to a ghost at Borley Rectory, rather than running for their lives in fear (and inevitably becoming injured). The contrast was not lost on me! It is a bit like the reactions of one or two characters in certain Lovecraft novels, which you turned on its head in your own books!
Cheers

Date: 2018-01-30 09:30 am (UTC)I'm still working through Ovate grade in CGD and find it odd that the figures Gwyn and Coch have respectively water and air active.
However, air is of the Mind and forms and water is of the emotions, so given your meanings of both Gwyn and Coch, I'd imagine their active elements would be swapped - thoughts?
Also, you say the circumambulation at the end of the Rite of Rays is counter-clockwise so my intuition is to also do the water purification and fire consecration at the end also counter-clockwise. Im even inclined to do the closing pentagram counterclockwise with banishing. Is this ego or worth doing? Thoughts?
Many thanks for your guidance

Date: 2018-01-30 03:15 pm (UTC)As you know, I live in China. Books, and mail, from overseas often don’t make it through, which make me wary of ordering books, or to some extent even of enrolling on the OBOD course.
I will be flying back to the UK next week, and will be staying for a couple of weeks. It’ll be my best chance for who knows how long to stock up on books on Druidry.
You’ve covered a lot of really interesting topics recently: reincarnation, the ascent of the soul through different stages, the way mammals and plants etc have different paths, the different planes, the Welsh gods, and so on. Is there any one book, or two, which covers all of these? I have the Druidry Handbook, but it doesn’t go into the depth of your recent explanations.
