It's time for Magic Monday again, my intermittent open post on occult theory and practice -- so ask me anything about occultism and I'll do my best to answer it. Any question received by midnight tonight Eastern time will get an answer, though it may be Tuesday sometime before I get to them all.

    I am drawn to the Celtic GD, but very much want to learn from/with people, not alone with a book-- would being trained in the Hermetic GD first be a sensible approach? I am not keen on the aloof attitude to earth and matter and such, but I might be able to suspend my philosophical qualms.

    It's your choice, of course, but these days I strongly recommend a year of solitary practice from books before trying to find a group -- your chances of being able to find a worthwhile group go up substantially if you have some background in the work already. If you want to go in for training in a group first, it would be best to do something unrelated to the Golden Dawn tradition -- otherwise you'll have to unlearn much of what you learnt, as the system in The Celtic Golden Dawn has its own distinct way of doing things.

    I asked partly because I like to learn things with the possibility of passing them on one day in mind, and that skill would be hard to get from books. Are the hermetic teaching methods transferable to the druidical GD?

    (I already have the chance to join a worthwhile GD group, according to an expert opinion, not my own assessment)

    The Druidical GD doesn't provide opportunities for teaching. It's arranged entirely to be learned and practiced on a solitary basis; the order basically functions as a venue for discussions of the teachings and practices, and a place to get your exams graded. When we have enough Druid grade initiates to begin chartering temples, those will have a variety of work to do, but students will still be responsible for their own training, following the curriculum in the book. I've set things up this way because I've watched too many magical lodges crash and burn because their members (a) didn't want to do the work the lodge was there to do, and (b) spent all their time playing social games of various kinds rather than doing the work the lodge was there to do.
