pillarsIt's getting on for midnight, so we can proceed with a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism and I'll do my best to answer it. With certain exceptions, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question or comment received after then will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted. (I've been getting an increasing number of people trying to post after these are closed, so will have to draw a harder line than before.) If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 143,916th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.0 of The Magic Monday FAQ hereAlso: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.

The picture? Two pillars. In the traditions of the Fellowship of the Hermetic Rose and the orders and systems related to it, these go on the altar when the temple is opened and are taken off the altar when the temple is closed. Like the Taoist taiji symbol on the right, they represent the dualities of existence -- matter and energy, life and death, positive and negative, and so on. (Traditionally the pillar on the left should be painted black and the one on the right should be painted white, but I couldn't find a pair like that while searching for images online.)

I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use either of the links above to access my online tip jar; Buymeacoffee is good for small tips, Ko-Fi is better for larger ones. (I used to use PayPal but they developed an allergy to free speech, so I've developed an allergy to them.) If you're interested in political and economic astrology, or simply prefer to use a subscription service to support your favorite authors, you can find my Patreon page here and my SubscribeStar page here.

Bookshop logoI've also had quite a few people over the years ask me where they should buy my books, and here's the answer. Bookshop.org is an alternative online bookstore that supports local bookstores and authors, which a certain gargantuan corporation doesn't, and I have a shop there, which you can check out here. Please consider patronizing it if you'd like to purchase any of my books online.

And don't forget to look up your Pangalactic New Age Soul Signature at CosmicOom.com.

With that said, have at it!

Good Evening,

Ever since reading Amy Tan's /The Moon Lady/, lavishly illustrated by Gretchen Schields, my older daughter has been very interested in the Chinese Moon Festival, so we enjoyed some Chinese food and moon cakes to mark the occasion. I hope you and yours had something equally nice for the fall's (or spring's) first full moon.

To Share: This week I share further thoughts on Maria Kvilhaug's The Seed of Yggdrasill, this time on chapter 4, which discusses a myth near and dear to my heart, the abduction and return of Idun: https://jpowellrussell.com/#book_the_seed_of_yggdrasill_4_retrieving_the_soul_of_the_gods

To Ask: As my link above indicates, I've been reading Maria Kvilhaug's The Seed of Yggdrasill, which is full of interesting insights, but one of her conclusions seems well-explained enough, but I can't really get what she's talking about, and I wonder if JMG or others might be able to help. Kvilhaug calls herself a pantheist, and tends to see the identities of the different Gods and Goddesses as fairly fluid, and mostly to do with what they're doing literarilly in any given myth. I may have some different ideas, but generally, I get the idea: each God or Goddess is more like a mask or a costume for a particular role, with the same undifferentiated divinity behind it. What I don't understand is when Kvilhaug describes the Goddess Idhun as "the Soul of the Gods." I think I'm tripping up on two main points: 1. If all of the Gods and Goddesses are just masks/aspects of an undifferentiated divinity, then what would a "soul" be separate from that undifferentiated divinity? 2. If a "soul" is something separate from the undifferentiated divinity, what would it mean for multiple Beings (much less multiple "masks") to share a soul?

Clearly, this is a good theme for meditation, and I will be giving it more time as such, but I suspect I'm making one or more category errors in how I'm conceiving of things.

As always, thanks very much to JMG and everyone else here for all that you do.

My blessings and best wishes to all who will have them,
Jeff

Dodging eclipses

Date: 2023-10-02 04:51 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
It so happens that I have a very challenging month ahead of me. I must move myself and family by a strict and inflexible deadline, under such conditions that one might fairly say we must move mountains to complete the necessary tasks on time. Much hangs on this.

It has come to my attention that a solar and a lunar eclipse are fast approaching, one on the fourteenth of the month and the other on the twenty-eighth, if memory serves. Reading and experience alike have taught me to be leery of eclipses. The last thing I need at such a critical time is for discordant celestial energies to come bolluxing up my already difficult tasks. Can you suggest any measures I might take to protect myself from their influences?

I have experience with basic HOGD magic, using Hellenic deities and mythology.

JMG,

Please could I ask if you know of any precedents for the phenomenon of 'gets' (repeated digits that appear more often than they randomly should and appear to have some significance or meaning associated with them) from before the 2016 USA election campaign?

Financial divination

Date: 2023-10-02 06:03 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hi JMG, I asked before about the use of divination to augment a short-term investing strategy - predicting whether hour-by-hour movements in a financial market would continue or reverse. Someone mentioned that such a use of magic was treading close to the pitfall of trying to get something for nothing.

Do you have an opinion on this? I see it as similar to a farmer or sailor using divination to determine what kind of weather is on the way. From my perspective a market can be seen as a natural emergent system, like the tide going in and out. Determining the course of such forces of nature has been one of the most ancient uses of magic and divination, and my divining for this purpose must be complemented by my own skills and understanding to be productive. I have trouble seeing it as being comparable to someone who wishes for millions of dollars to fall from the sky.

Thanks again for these posts.

My (non-JMG) initial two cents on this... compare short-term trading to your other examples. A sailor or a farmer who successfully uses divination has, say, prevented a disaster or produced a more bountiful harvest. There are individual winners and losers from that outcome (e.g., their direct competitors), but overall society is richer by having more "stuff" regardless of the specific distribution

With short-term trading, there is a nonzero amount of value created by helping make prices incrementally more accurate. That is a very, very small amount, though. The vast majority of your gains and losses are just the flip side of other people's experience. While most other participants probably understand and accept that dynamic at some level, not all of them do.

Maybe "getting something for nothing" isn't 100% the best way to characterize it, as there could be some level of required skill/knowledge involved. Regardless, it is pretty close to a zero-sum game.

Hi JMG,

Thanks for this post and everything else you write.

I've only become open to the idea of magic and the esoteric tradition in the past 12 months, after shaking myself out of hardliner atheist materialism a decade ago. This stuff is all new to me, though I do have a strong familiarity with ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, so it wasn't that shocking.

Here's my question with that background in mind.

I went through a self-imposed tough time in life from my early 20s through my early 30s, which had no cause but my own inner mental trash. I don't know how to describe it beyond saying that "life was not working". I felt like I was drifting, with no purpose and no hope, and anxiety made it impossible for me to see any possibility of change. At the time I wrote it off as youth believing that surely it would change.

Even after the worst I was left with this nagging feeling that things just aren't "working" and aren't meant to work for me. My life today is not quite the smoking crater, but only just so, even though looking in from outside you might not think it. I still have this nagging feeling that things aren't working and aren't meant to work. For example, starting new projects or employment, or even achieving smaller life-goals. It feels like a cosmic weight holding me back.

Is it possible that this was/is the result of a malign spiritual influence, if I happened to anger an immaterial being or a human magic user at some time in my past?

I'd never have entertained the idea even two years ago but after learning about negative influences of magic, I've begun to wonder.

Realignment through the planes?

Date: 2023-10-02 08:22 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
From main blog #22
JMG – two replies you gave on latest occult Q&A on Magic Monday:

“There are some very, very weird things moving through the astral these days. I don’t have a clear sense of what they portend, but something’s up.”

...JMG and commentariat – is anyone experiencing fluctuations in how spiritual, occult, meditation or other related practices?

Dreams are different recently, not bad, not good, but pretty weird and jumping about.

Meditation wise, I have been doing increased work on emotions working with the 5 elemental processes (e.g. gentleness releasing and transforming fear or kindness transforming anger) as what are unexpected emotional surges popping up, seemingly out of nowhere.

If things are percolating down to the material realm one wonders what is going on and what the reorganising of things! Guess we’ll have to wait and see; but, if the level of crazy in virtually every area of western societies is anything to go by, there is some serious activity going on out there.

Are folks finding their inner practices impacted?

To which JMG replied:
"Earthworm, yes, I’ve noticed some rough inner terrain in my practices. That’s happened before, but this is toward the upper end."

Later on Boccaccio #340 said:
"In the meantime, my country the Netherlands is at peak-craziness. I wonder if it is caused by the astral crud.
...A disgruntled student with immigration background killed his neighbour, her child and a teacher at his university because the university had demanded a test of his psychological health before giving him his medical master title."
*****

Data point: The missus' brother who is a college/university lecturer (UK) reported to her a few days ago that recently a student who refused to do the work was told numerous times that they would fail if it was not done; then when no work was done and the student was duly failed, this resulted in death threats from the student... and then the father started sending death threats too. Disturbing to contemplate.

But further on the subject of dreams and inner practices, it certainly feels like something is in flux.

JMG - any thoughts or cautions on inner terrain etc for practices just now (beyond 'make sure to do your work' ;) )?

Your Books

Hi,

Your Magic Monday FAQs list your five categories of books and explain which books are compatible. Do I have this right? "Compatible" means the ceremonies and rituals do not conflict. It is still okay to read from incompatible books for education and no harm is done?

Also, I am always disappointed not to see "The Druid Path" listed.

Challenging Geomancy Topic

Date: 2023-10-02 11:12 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hi, JMG. I would like your view on a geomancy chart that I have recently cast. I find it a bit challenging because of the nature of the question. In brief, there is an anti-government social movement that is presently unfolding. My question is whether the movement will benefit for the people of my country.

The four mothers are:
M1: Populus
M2: Laetitia
M3: Conjunctio
M4: Acquisitio

The court that is generated by these figures are:
Right Witness: Puella
Left Witness: Rubeus
Judge: Via

My reading of the court is that this movement will create a transition from cooperation and harmony (Puella) to confrontation and conflict (Rubeus): in general, this does not look good for the people of my country.

Now, I am of the habit of interpreting both the court and the house chart. Given the nature of the question, I took the 1st house to represent the citizens of my country. The figure happens to be Populus. I see it as representing a unified mass of people (as an aside, in a scrying that I did years ago on Populus I saw a monument commemorating the townspeople overthrowing a local tyrant through their show of unity) and, so, I believe that this is a somewhat favourable figure for this question.

I also paid attention to a few other houses and to their figures and any interaction with each other and with the 1st house. I looked at the 9th house, as there is both a religious and legal/ethics aspect to this movement. The figure is the highly favourable figure of Laetitia, which I take to mean that they are making swift gains and feel empowered and/or that they are on the right side. Laetitia passes to the 2nd house and therefore perfects by conjunction with the 1st house.

As the movement is anti-government, I figured that it makes sense to look at the 10th house. Placed there is the strong figure Fortuna Major, which I take to mean that the government is not seriously threatened by the movement. Fortuna Major also perfects with the 1st house, but it is placed in the inauspicious 12th house: I take this to mean that the government may use traitors/spies to discredit the movement in the eyes of the public; given the nature of the figure, it has me concerned.

Now for the twist: Fortuna Major also appears in the 6th house, which is square Laetitia in the 9th house and therefore shows an opposing or blocking force to the hopes indicated in the 9th house. Now, the 6th is also the house of the working class – and this movement also has a strong ‘blue collar’ element to it. This is what throws me off, as I see the blue collar element to be the least likely group to be corrupted by the government -- though it may be possible for them to be ‘duped’ by government-allied (or funded) agents of disinformation, sowers of discord, or architects of a ‘trap’ (12th house stuff).

The cardines are fairly favourable: Populus (I), Fortuna Major (X), Albus (VII) and Acquisitio (IV), indicating that the public could gain from the situation. The Reconciler is Via.

So, there we have it: my take-home is that the movement will change the ‘tone’ of anti-government activities to being less peaceful (and may face harsh government opposition) and despite the moral and legal justification of the movement, the public as a whole will not be significantly affected by it – but, if they are affected, it will be to more fully unify them which could be beneficial.

Sorry it’s so long, but I figure that by giving a full interpretation, it will give you more points to agree or disagree with. This is a hard chart for me to be objective about and I cast it because intuitively I have been getting ‘mixed signals’ about the whole thing; hence I am reaching out to you. Thanks!

Ron M

Hi JMG. I would like to ask a question about your "temple technology" hypothesis. I didn't understand why Roman Catholic church wanted to suppress this technology in the Middle Ages. I mean, instead of suppressing it, they could have usurped it for their own benefit (to increase crop yields in their fields), and add some Christian flavor to its lore to cover its pre-Christian origins. It doesn't seem like a dangerous heresy for the church. Why did they resort to suppress it so violently?

Clarification about the different self

Date: 2023-10-02 12:55 pm (UTC)
From: [personal profile] abrahamjpalma
Good day, JMG.

As it happens, I'm working through the introspection I mentioned last week.

It seems to me that for every emotion, there is a different response depending on what part of myself is taking the hit. Sometimes it is me, the one who thinks these words, who feels something and the emotion is manifested as a physical change in the body, a shot of hormones that modifies heartbeat and other nasty effects.
But it is not the same reaction when the emotion is triggered by instinct than triggered by consciousness. The instictive one reacts before I am able to redirect its energies.

Also, there's the projected self: the one I play for the others. This self doesn't have emotions on his own, but may pretend he has them. Even when I am not feeling like it, if my projection 'should be feeling' something, I have to make the projection react accordingly. This one is rarely a problem, since I am rather honest.

It looks as if we people were made of layers, each one of them able to feel in its own particular way, and each one makes the feeling resonate across all the realities of the self (not just the planes).

A second insight about how to redirect the energies showed me that I should never go directly against the direction of the force. If I want to punch someone, I don't have to waste my energies holding the force, that is repression and that extenuates me. I should apply tangential force towards a target that is not directly related to my goals, either, so the force goes in the direction of my goals.
So, instead of punching someone's face who is limiting me, I'd take actions that would set myself as a more knowledgeable person in some other field, and eventually this would help me overcome the limits.

A third insight is that while I am not lacking of wrath and fear, attraction and repulsion, I am very scarce on joy and sorrow. It's as if I had muffled these type of feelings in my youth, so I am never too attached to anything that I have strong feelings of gain or lose. Here is where my projection comes to help my social life, since it can fake joy and sorrow as proper as it should.

Not bad for a week's work.

Supplies for CGD work

Date: 2023-10-02 01:17 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Good morning, and thank you for hosting this forum as always. I'm working my way through the Ovate grade of the CGD and putting my kit together, so a few questions about gear and supplies this time. Might be a bit mundane compared to the more high-flying discussions here, but this is also a part of occult practice, right? :)

1) The book calls for a porcelain mortar for the spagyric work. I happen to have an unused stone mortar/pestle I was planning on using before I checked the book and again and noticed this detail. Should I get hold of one that's specifically porcelain, or will stone do?

2) The procedure also calls for 75% alcohol. Unfortunately, it turns out 60% is the highest alcohol content that can be legally sold or imported in my European country, and I don't have any realistic way to get hold of anything stronger. How much of a problem is this in terms of the CGD practice? I suppose I'll just have to make do with the 60%?

3) I've also got the Mysteries of Merlin book and might start those ceremonies with the winter solstice. Of course these call for a number of altar cloths of specific colors. Do you (or the commentariat) have any suggestions for good places to find these? Maybe specific small vendors who deserve some support? A matching set would be nice too, which is another plus with buying them all from the same place. I can import from a US seller if need be.

a) Do you have any advice for learning how to improve one's own karma in a systematic fashion? It's occurred to me as I try to dig myself out from another self-inflicted mess that this skill would be extremely useful to have; and while it's probably something which can't be fully mastered as a human being, but any capacity here is still going to be remarkably helpful.

b) I'm planning to start giving a decent portion of my income to causes I support. One concern I have is that there is a lot of fraud and theft happening in "charitable" organizations right now. I'm planning to do due diligence, but I doubt I'll be able to fully vet the charities, given there's only so much time in a day, and a lot of the people involved in such thefts try to hide it. Is there a standard process for people without relationships to any gods to reach out to a deity who rules the domain in question and ask for assistance in ensuring the money reaches the intend people and is not stolen before it reaches them?

Greetings, JMG -

I recently witnessed a most peculiar phenomenon, and I'm wondering if you could shed any light on it.

I just recently had my first encounter with grave dowsing. I watched an individual use copper dowsing rods - the kinds where you have long rods sitting perpendicular in handles, and you hold the handle upright and the rods, which are parallel to the ground, swing about as indicators - over old burial sites, and the result was most eerie. The rods absolutely seemed to respond to the presence of human remains beneath the ground, and even seemed to be able to indicate the sex of the buried bodies.

I found the demonstration especially compelling, because the person doing the dowsing showed this phenomenon to people as part of an unrelated event, so there was no incentive to produce paranormal phenomenon for an audience who had come looking (and paying) for it. This was a totally incidental "oh, and by the way, I know you're here to learn about how I repair gravestones - but before you go, check THIS out" demonstration. The dowser's experience indicated that this phenomenon worked on any kind of buried human remains, including cremains, as long as they weren't enclosed in a concrete vault with rebar, which seemed to block the energy.

Questions -

What might be going on here? What are the rods sensing, and how does it work?
Would this dowsing work for anyone, or does the person doing the dowsing have to have a special sensitivity to the phenomenon? (The guy in question restores old gravestones for a living, so clearly he has an affinity for burial grounds.)
And does the energy they sense have anything to do with why Catholic alters have saints' relics in them, and how does that work? And/or is it related to the use of relics in general?
Also, I tend to find old cemeteries quite peaceful, but don't like modern ones. Now I'm wondering if old burial grounds literally have a different energy due to the absence of the underground vaults that block whatever energy that was.

Thanks much, I'm quite curious about this whole phenomenon. If there are any further books or other resources you could recommend, I'd be most interested!

And if any commentators are familiar with this phenomenon, I'd love to hear about it....

Singing

From: (Anonymous)
A few weeks ago emmanuelg posted "Singing is about the only mystical/spiritual thing remaining in many branches of Protestant Christianity." I'm sad to have to agree with that. I too feel part of the mystical body of believers, everyone who has ever participated in worship by singing that hymn, when I sing older hymns especially. Sadly, those hymns are disappearing from Christian worship, and many that remain are frequently modernized to the point where I feel that they lose their power.
Why might that be? Don't most Christians feel the same way I do when singing those? Are their consciences damaged by their participation in the depradations of popular society, to the point where they don't feel worthy? Or are no longer spiritually sensitive? God, please grant me the grace that my heart does not grow hard.
I played the YouTube music links that emmanuelg posted right away. Nice stuff. After playing the last link, the link below, Mass for Two Choirs and Two Organs by Charles Marie Widor came up. It's music that I listen to when, as my kids say, I'm "in a mood". Well, from the previous links YouTube must have decided that I was "in a mood". Fair warning--Widor is a bit of a madman and this piece has the weight of a freighter going 90 miles/hour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnXrIE4odhY

Hi JMG,

Recently I visited a garage sale of a neighbors a few doors down, I typically try to go to garage sales as they are an excellent opportunity to find books for extremely cheap. While looking through their books I was incredibly surprised to find, on top of a large stack of Playboys, the Satanic Bible by Anton Lavey and accompanying resources. Since they are selling them have probably never bothered to follow things more seriously so who knows.

Clearly this is a popular book from searching online which appears to center around individualism, materialism, rationality, etc., with additional rituals. At least from what I could tell at a cursory flip through and some background reading.

My questions is, would you do anything differently knowing your neighbor potentially follows or followed this particularly version of Satanism? My sense is no, but I can't help but thinking of it as I pass the house daily and gradually work on my own practices, so thought it best to ask.

Thank you for your insights!

Literally millions of copies of The Satanic Bible were sold during the 1970s; to have a copy marked the owner as a "with it" young person, worthy of his peers' respect and attention as a rebel against conventional American life. Hardly any of the purchasers actually joined Lavey's Church of Satan or bought his follow-up book of Satanic Rituals. I wouldn't worry about that neighbor of yours, myself.

JMG and other commentators,

Good week to everyone!

In your opinion, what would be the guardian angel, or sacred guardian angel?

What would be the best way to get in touch with this entity, without the Abramelin exercise?

Thanks you!

Do you have a recommended book to read that talks more about the symbolism of the two pillars in depth?

Invoking the Sun to Find What I Want

A couple of weeks ago someone asked how to learn what they want and you suggested invoking the sun.
I asked my Ogham if that would be a good idea for me and drew Upright Mor.
1. I take it this is a "burn a yellow candle at the day and hour of the sun and ask for clarity" kind of thing? Do I do it a "sun" number of times/weeks?
2. I am a student of the Dolmen Arch (finishing up Grade 5) and invoke the Welsh gods in my SOP. Should I thus also pray to Celi of the Sun or Sul of the Sun for this, or should I just stick with the planetary body of the sun?
3. Often you recommend to then cement such a working by acting in the material plane. I'm guessing I should pay attention to my will afterwards and act deliberately, as if I am already a person who knows what I want. Does that sound good?
Thank you for your guidance!
You have my blessings if you'd like them.

Heimdall

Hi JMG,

I was looking for a picture of the Norse god Heimdall the other day, and came across this one:
https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BHi2OQwhTd8/V4eRInVgp2I/AAAAAAAAVy4/X-c6nszs1BsD7Z9xCTkZmY0V-KD_FwdpACLcB/s1600/heimdall.jpg

Now this looks a lot more like a certain Greek god than other pictures of Heimdall I've seen, but is from the Icelandic Eddas.

In the same way that Hermes was often conflated with other gods such as Anubis (eg. Hermanubis), do you know if Hermes and Heimdall were ever conflated?(Hermdall? Heimes?)

Thanks.

Hi there JMG! Hope you and everyone had a nice equinox and happy October to you.

Some questions:

Q1: I noticed even more intensity than usual during the FHR equinox ritual this time. Is that because more people are practicing it?

Q2: I recall you’ve said elsewhere that the FHR uses the book for air for clarity so there would be no more confusing about whether it was wands or daggers for air? Is this also why Dr. Ashley invented new symbols to use for earth and air?

Q3: Do you think that there are any occult implications to people participating in a pronoun circle while in an altered state of consciousness?

Some data points to share with you:

D1: Historically, I’ve always entered trances and altered states VERY easily - too easily, at times. What was difficult for me has always been coming back after. Between a daily protective ritual (initially LBRP+MP, then I switched over the SoP) and the weekly FHR Temple ritual, I don’t have this problem anymore. I can still enter an altered state easily but I’m much more lucid and I now come back easily and without issue when I’m supposed to.

D2: Daily protective ritual and weekly temple rituals have also overall improved my ability to feel and move energy around.

D3: Daily protective ritual protects me! Go figure! 😉 People who try to kind of throw their energy at me or draw something off of me (either intentionally or inadvertently) just don’t really get anywhere with it. Regular spiritual work definitely strengthens everything over time, just like physical exercise. This is common sense but the regular daily work you recommend and the FHR requires really takes it to another level.

Thanks so much! ♥️

I’ve had a constant foreboding sense of something awful coming for the USA for several years now, but it has ebbed and flowed in intensity during that time. Right now it’s peaking again. I feel like an animal who knows something dangerous is lurking out of sight. Hackles raised. On alert.

What it is, specifically, I can’t fully see. It’s blurry. I try but the best I can bring into focus is the phrase “after 2025, everything is different.” And a sense of deep suffering by many people. Persecutions, maybe. I’m not sure.

Another phrase that came to me very suddenly and intensely (while in Stop n Shop here in Rhode Island, of all places) is “your country has lost the mandate of heaven.” It felt very intense, very stark.

Anyone else tapped into this?

JMG, what do you think?

I’m coping through prayer.

Thank you for reading.

Hello JMG!

Is there any drawback to worshipping specific aspects of the divine such as beauty or love, rather than worshipping the divine in its totality?

Specifically in regards to integrating and becoming more conscious of myself.

I’m wondering if rejecting or ignoring aspects of the divine that I find repulsive - greed, horror, etc. - I’m also doing so within myself?

On one hand, that seems perfectly reasonable to me, as I would never want to act on certain emotions or behaviors. On the other hand, it’s dualistic to think this way, and divinity seems to be where duality ends.

Is this something that has to be sorted uniquely on the various planes? Is this something that shouldn’t be of concern until a maturity in spiritual/magical development?

Thank you!
