John GilbertIt's getting on for midnight, so we can proceed with a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism and I'll do my best to answer it. With certain exceptions, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question received after then will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted. I've been getting an increasing number of people trying to post after these are closed, so will have to draw a harder line than before.) If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 143,916th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.0 of The Magic Monday FAQ hereAlso: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.

The image?  I've decided to do another pass through magical personalities, and I figured I'd start with one of my own teachers. This is John Gilbert, with whom I studied the teachings of the Universal Gnostic Church, the Order of Spiritual Alchemy, the Modern Order of Essenes, and the Magickal Order of the Golden Dawn -- this last, of course, is the parent body of the Fellowship of the Hermetic Rose. This photo was taken in 2008 in eastern Tennessee at a Druid event there; it was the last time John and I met in person, though we corresponded via email and talked on the phone quite a bit after that.

I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use the button above to access my online tip jar. If you're interested in political and economic astrology, or simply prefer to use a subscription service to support your favorite authors, you can find my Patreon page here and my SubscribeStar page here.

Bookshop logoI've also had quite a few people over the years ask me where they should buy my books, and here's the answer. Bookshop.org is an alternative online bookstore that supports local bookstores and authors, which a certain gargantuan corporation doesn't, and I now have a shop there, which you can check out here. Please consider patronizing it if you'd like to purchase any of my books online.

Good Evening!

As promised last week, if celebrating a cross-quarter day is part of your festal year, and if you prefer the halfway mark between the solstice and equinox to the first of August, then a happy Lughnasadh to you! Otherwise, a very happy Sunday night/Monday.

Thanks very much, JMG, for hosting this space and your time and effort in answering the wide variety of questions. Thank you also for sharing the picture of John Gilbert, and even more so for sharing the teachings he has passed on to you - to judge by what you've shared, he was quite the figure.

To Share: A few weeks back, I asked about resources on prayer, and samchevre was kind enough to share the Catechism of the Council of Trent (1829), and specifically its Part IV On Prayer. I found this extremly helpful (though I'm still reading through the parts analyzing the "Our Father" in depth), and I've written up some of my takeaways on what prayer can be about and how it can be useful, whatever your spiritual path, here, should anyone find that helpful.

To Ask: Having meditated my way through the first branch of the Mabinogion, I am now working on the Druid Philosophy triads from the Dolmen Arch. For JMG and/or the commentariat, is it normal to feel like I'm slamming my forehead into a brick wall with these first few Triads, and any advice besides "keep at it"? My current approach is to spend 3 days per triad (one day focusing on each part), with lots of re-reading in between meditation sessions.

Thanks very much,
Jeff

On 2), if I might follow up: this sounds like solid advice, but I'm not sure how to apply it to the first few triads on Awen, as they seem to be fundamentally about something utterly outside of daily experience. For these, would the examples from daily life be something like experiences of the divine?

I'll keep plodding along regardless, but I was starting to think I was getting the hang of this discursive meditation thing, and I'd prefer for the next few weeks not to feel so much like pulling teeth, so thanks very much for the advice.

Cheers,
Jeff

Other tracks (from my time exploring academic philosophy): try defining terms and then using the definition you chose instead of the word. Try a different definition, how does the meaning change. Try a synonym for any given word (like beyond;) then think about whether the meaning changed for you and why beyond was the word chosen. Try mapping the triad with formal logic. Try isolating subjects and verbs and writing the triad as simply as possible.

I am glad you are finding "On Prayer" from the Catechism of the Council of Trent helpful.

One note, because the web page is somewhat confusing: the English translation is from 1829; the Latin original was published in 1566.

You've commented before about the changes in the subtle body that correspond to puberty (roughly the opening of channels in the subtle bodies that carry sexual/magical energies, with the end of this process being roughly the age of first menarche in girls and IIRC the first wet dream in boys). What subtle factors, if any, affect the age at which this process happens for a given individual?

A rather interesting conversation I ran across elsewhere earlier this week; it's anecdotal, but if it holds then given my own impressions from what I remember of my own school days (quite a bit more recent than yours) it would suggest that the average age of first menarche has jumped forwards by about a year in the last decade alone. (First menarche used to be in the 12-15 range; my impression was that the age range when I was in school was closer to 11.5-13; this thread if it hold would suggest that the modern age range averages closer to 10.5 years old.)

There's an obvious set of *physical* plane causes for this if this is in fact a real effect (lots of calories, nutrition issues, xenoestrogen exposure); but a change like this strikes me as potentially reflective of changes or conditions on the higher planes as well and I was wondering if the literature had anything to suggest on the subject.

Not exactly what you're going for, but if I remember right, I've read in some anthropology/evolutionary psych literature that girls who grow up in poorer/harsher life circumstances tend to hit menarche earlier than those in more comfortable surroundings. There might also be some correlation with ethnicity, but that can be hard to sort out from the kind of environmental factors I first mentioned. The Ev. Psych argument goes something like "the bodies of girls in less comfortable circumstances pursue a strategy of something like "get some kids out while the gettings good!", whereas the bodies of girls in more comfortable circumstances recognize the opportunity to be choosier, which might mean waiting longer to make babies.

Of course, all of this assumes that a) you think Evolutionary Psychology is a valid/useful field, and b) that any subtle effects are utterly dependent on physiological ones. It also would go against the general trend you're proposing if things are basically "better" physically for most girls, but that might also make for useful triangulation: if it's historically true that girls in poorer/more severe circumstances hit menarche earlier than more comfortable girls, but these days, even the comfortable girls are hitting menarche earlier, that might be a very telling data point.

Thanks,
Jeff

Another possibility is some form of epigenetic factor (epigenetic = heritable phenotype changes that do not involve alterations in the DNA sequence).

I remember seeing a study somewhere that female offspring who are born when their fathers were older were more likely to remain fertile for longer. It couldn't be "pure" genetics, because the older siblings of these offspring (who were born when the same fathers were younger) did not exhibit the extended fertility. Apparently, the fact that the fathers were older when they produced these later offspring somehow "told" the females' genetics to "stay fertile longer". I can't remember the details of the study, or if it applied only to animals and not necessarily humans, but the point is, there are epigentic factors at work in reproduction. Something can "tell" the genes that older parents are apparently still reproducing, so conditions must be good and you can plan to keep reproducing longer.

It's possible that one of the reasons females might reach menarche younger could have to do with parental factors. Perhaps pregnancies taking place in higher-stress situations (meaning stress of any kind, emotional or physical, poor nutrition, etc.), or even fathers experiencing high stress levels (maybe cortisol affects sperm) could have an epigentic effect that "tells" the offpring's genes that times are tough, plan to reproduce early because it's rough out there and you may not live that long.

It also has to do with bodyfat percentage. No matter how rough your life circumstances, if you're not getting enough to eat you tend to reach menarche later. My grandmother (amazing family, but very poor, never more than adequate food to go around, kids weren't stunted, but were skinny!) didn't get there until nearly 18.

From an evolutionary standpoint, this makes perfect sense-- you don't make babies if you can't round up enough calories to support one.

But IMO a lot of evolutionary "science" is just spinning a compelling story to explain away some pathological aspect of modern life. Why go straight for "this is adaptive somehow" when it could as easily be explained by environmental toxins or other physical damage? Damage isn't adaptive. Damage is damage.

The idea that some of these things could stem from issues on the non-material planes is intriguing. How would you find out?

Body fat and menarche

My understanding is that there is a limit to the percentage of body fat to allow for first menarche, and menstruation more generally. If the body fat percentage goes below that limit, menstruation cannot occur. My own menarche was at age 14 and I tended to skip periods, sometimes for months, until my body fat percentage increased, when I was well into my 20s. I think at least part of the reason that first menarche age is dropping is due to increased body fat percentage at younger ages, which in turn may have something to do with decreased levels of activity.

Another question about cats

Hi JMG,

I have asked about the magical importance of cats in the past and as I am a Kemet whose patron is Bastet, cats are a fairly common topic. Now one of my last questions comes to this: why is it that cats are the black sheep of the media world? In any media, tv, movies, or otherwise, you would be hard pressed to see a cat or something to related to it not be abused.

Is it just commonly funny (for some people) to use them as the abuse/horror trope? Or is there a larger undercurrent of deeming them as “evil” or “dark” by the same kind of people who would burn them en masse in the 1400s during the witch hunts? It seems that the rate of these “jokes” have increased during this very dark period of time, which makes me so uneasy and nauseous I have to turn of the tv.

My favorite was the crazy cat from The Kiss (1988) that they hit with a garden rake and fried in the bug zapper. So suburban. Mr. Kittles from Scary Movie 2 was based off of it. I love cats btw. If you are cool to them then the vast majority who aren't totally wild will eventually be friendly right back, but apparently that's way too demanding for some people.

Unfortunately, it's simple practicality. Dogs are more difficult to get ahold of or bully in the way that gets good results onscreen. Meanwhile, cats are smaller, seen as more durable, easier to locate while not being associated with disease. It is a wholly unpleasant business.

This is actually a well-known trope of media writers, which you can see here: https://www.amazon.com/Save-Last-Book-Screenwriting-Youll/dp/1932907009

They explain what a "Save the Cat" scene is like this: "It's the scene where we meet the hero and hero does something - like saving a cat - that defines who he is and makes us, the audience, like him." The reverse of this trope is equally true as well. Harm a cat and that character is signaled as the villain, or at least a person who the audience will not sympathize with should they be punished or harmed later on.
So "cat", in media, can sometimes be a used a a short-hand for morality.

What does it mean when the usage of the "cat" symbol changes over time? I have no idea, I'm just passing along what little relevant information I happen to have.

Good morning JMG,

I have some things to share.
at a recent get together with some old friends I got an interesting peace of information. It seems that in the last years the university in Wyoming, that was having financial troubles in its technology and informatics departments simply shut down. Then in the same vain they reestablished a new university of technology and informatics. In that way they lost a lot of the old entrenched tenured staff, that consequently did not have tenure with the new university. This is just hearsay I heard of and needs to be proved. But it points to the trends you warned about.

Best regards, V

The source said, that one of the goals was to specifically target the old entrenched professors, who „did nothing, had double the salaries of the younger staff and the institution could not shed „. So disolve the institution and there is nobody to owe tenure.

Wyoming College Shut Down and Reopened

Date: 2022-08-09 02:10 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hmm, Wyoming is a tiny state with a very small higher education footprint. The only college that fits the description of this is Wyo Tech, a small for-profit automotive technology school (not a university--Wyoming only has one and it is still going strong and has tenure). They used to be owned by Corinthian schools with Wyomng Technical College campuses in many states. The government went after Corinthian for gainful employment infractions, forcing them to close or sell all their higher education holdings. The original Wyoming Technical College in Laramie was purchased by a different company, and reopened as WyoTech. This may very well have disenfranchised the old established faculty/staff, but that was not the driving force behind it--the federal government forced this because it felt students were getting charged too much and were not given the outcomes they were promised. Students at the Corinthian colleges are among those that will most likely get student loan debt forgiven.

Mr. Greer --

A blessed (if belated) Lammas to you and yours.

In the past month, I have managed to find a group of fellow practitioners, and we have started working together. It is going well so far, and I expect we should be able to part ways without too many hurt feelings if it starts to go poorly. Now that I have this group, I have no interest in advertising myself. Is this common?

Two more direct questions:
1) Do you know much about the artist Elihu Vedder?
2) If you have a deck of Tarot cards with several missing, what should you do with the remainder?

Thank you.

I was going to try and work this last question out all on my my own, but then I realized I didn't know enough to make a solid call on it. So I leave what I have gathered so far.

I am calling a man about use of an unused agricultural lot in his possession that would be ideal for magical work. He previously allowed my group to use it for Lammas, but I am trying to arrange for us to use it long-term. He seems to be agreeable to this, but I want to make sure it works out as well as possible.

Due to his schedule, I will have to call him on either this Saturday or Sunday. Saturday is a 1 day for me, while Sunday is a 2 day. While neither of them are ideal for this, I would like input on which day would be best. I would guess that all hours would work decently for this undertaking except for Venus, Mars, and the Moon.

Best time to accept a job

Hi JMG,

Thanks for the MM

What is the best time for accepting a job formally (I assume nowadays in Zoom/online times is when you click on the button in the online internal system). You only get there after you've talked to HR on the phone and such

I was thinking planetary day & hour of Jupiter, try to do it during Aquisitio

if it's too far away, then anyday of the week during Aquisitio?

What do you think?

Thank you,

From: (Anonymous)
Thank you, wasn't expecting that...if you could please elaborate more...

The job is a data analyst role. Hence I thought first Mercury. Also, if it makes any difference I just got a Mercury Talisman to help with jobs (cannot get anything else because I'm Libra)

But then I thought Jupiter, because it's Aquisitio related, and I've had better results applying for jobs during Aquisitio/Thursdays.

Regarding 'expect to relate to people' / 'interactions'

I've been in very toxic/bad environments at work in my last 2 jobs. The first one was the worst, so bad that I left the field/career and went into data.

The last one, was backstabbing and very politically correct spineless crowd, but it seems that is the new normal in office environments nowadays. I'm normally very quiet and just want to do my job.

What I would wish is a good, supportive, positive environment. If I cannot have that, then I'd wish just plain business only type of interactions.

To be honest, I'm probably an undiagnosed autistic person, just faking it all this time. It's too late for me to do anything about it or to change career once again, I just need to try and cope the best I can.

Another question for you...have you ever heard of a situation where the sign of the person is 'broken'. As a Libra by default I should be great with relationships, women, etc., but it's almost as if all of that is upside down... Do you think that a Talisman of Venus would help?

Thank you again

A few months ago I asked a question about deliniating the head of state in my country for the recent Cancer ingress. The inauguration occurred yesterday with some very interesting timing, instead of opting for the Sun to be in the 10th house or conjunct the 10th house cusp, the inaguration took place with the Sun in the middle of the 8th house, and Jupiter in the 4th house, exactly conjunct the Aires 4th house cusp. The Uranus-Mars conjunction squaring Saturn which is the chart ruler. Neptune in the third house, while Venus is in the 7th house, Mercury is at the 9th house cusp, and the Moon in the 12th house.

What is even stranger is that while the donning of the presidential sash is the formal sign for assumption of the presidency, the ceremony was paused for an hour afterwards until another piece of inaugural regalia, Bolivar's sword, was dug out and brought forth to the technically now president. With this brought out is the sign for the president to begin his inagural address. By the time this began, the Sun had passed into the 7th house with Venus still in there, Mars-Uranus in the 4th, Saturn in the 2nd, Jupiter and Neptune in the 3rd, Mercury in the 8th, and the Moon in the 11th.

I am bit flabbergasted over how terrible an election the proper inaguration time is (local time 3:19pm, 20:19UT, Moon 16 Sag 25'15", Bogota Colombia). Saturn ruling the first, Uranus the second, Mars the 4th, an 8th house cusp Leo with the Sun in the middle of it. The second chart (4:21pm local time, 21:21UT, 17 Sag 2'19") is a little bit better for the Sun, but terrible none the less.

His Vice President was inaugurated a few minutes after him, thus Jupiter is still conjunct the nadir, but from the 3rd house. I truly wonder what is the deal with the sword regalia, if there is an assumption that the inauguration was incomplete until it was brought forth.

The frustrating thing was that there were good elections between 1:00pm to 2:50pm local time, which would have left him politically weakened, but would have been in line with his stated political goals, with the political classes enacting his reforms out of spite just to steal the credit.

Two astrology/planetary questions

Date: 2022-08-08 07:44 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Good morning JMG,

And thank you once again for the treasured chance to ask questions! :-)

Two questions today, if I may:

1. In your natural magic Encyclopedia, health is listed as belonging to Mercury. However, browsing through the talismans on Christopher Warnock‘s site, there are a few (less than a handful) of Mercury health talismans, but most of the ones associated with health belong to the Sun.

I also vaguely remember reading somewhere about a connection between Jupiter and health, but I‘m not sure about that anymore, so my mind could be making this up. ;-)

Could you explain which parts/aspects of health relate to the respective planets? (I don‘t mean the body parts etc, but when would Mercury in general be appropriate for a health issue, and when would the Sun, or Jupiter, or …).

2. I‘m inching my way into astrology and have reached that blissful state of knowledge where at least I know that I don‘t know. ;-)

However, I realised that I very much lack an overview of the different systems of astrology. I.e. „modern“ astrology (as in Parker‘s, with the new planets) vs. renaissance astrology (and maybe vs. vedic and other kinds of astrology). And the same for the different house systems (Whole Sign Houses vs. Regiomontanus vs. Placidus vs. others).

Do you know of any good and reliable written comparison? Any recommendable websites, posts or books which explain the advantages, disadvantages and limits of the different systems and house systems?

(I‘d rather read some reliable, recommended information than just do a random internet search. There‘s a ton of info about astrology out there, but even beginner-me can tell that a lot of it is just rehashed stuff, or new agey wishful thinking, or very weird stuff where I‘m sure people had a lot of fun smoking whatever before they wrote it. ;-) But if I knew which of the info out there was solid, I wouldn‘t have to look it up anymore…)

Thanks, and blessings to you and your wife!

Not JMG, but the Mercury is connected with healing in general - his staff still decorates medical buildings - but the Sun is also connected with healing, but in a different way. First of all, the Sun purifies and disinfects, secondly the Sun rules the heart, which is essential for health. English astrological doctor Joseph Blagrave pretty much always included Solar herbs in his remedies (his "Physick" is a mind blower.)

First of all, thank you for your many excellent books. I know that you, as the author, might not have any say in the matter, but is there any chance of Circles of Power coming out in hardcover? I've about worn out my paperback. I've spent a bit over a year making and consecrating a full suite of working tools - and it's been quite an adventure. I'm looking forward to getting into some of the advanced techniques now.

On to my question: can you offer any advice on how to reconcile that fourth magical virtue with operating as a professional magician? I guess you don't get into the details of what you do in private, but it is no secret that you are up to your eyeballs in magic. I'm not sure if I really want do it, but I have been toying with the idea of opening up a little shop someday to do horoscopes and divination, perhaps sell some astrological talismans - or maybe setting up a booth at fairs and flea markets. How (if at all) would one stay Silent while using these skills to help people and make a little money?

Each outer element has four figures attributed to it, but amongst the inner elements only water and earth have four, air has five and fire has three.
Is there are reason for this that you know of?

The element fire has 3 because it is the first element, and 3 is the first number that can produce structure.
The elements water and earth has 4 because 4 makes the square and tetrahedron which are stable and represent a denser form. Also it is the only integer number more than 3 and less than 5.
The element air has 5 because it is the product of an odd an even number 2+3 and 1+4, air is the child of fire and water.

It's not a perfect answer but its a start.

Urgent update

I just finished my morning meditation, choosing this problem as a theme, and I likely answer came to me.

It seems to relate to the Tetragrammaton, but with numbers and geometric shapes instead of letters. 3-4-5-4 is the triangle, the square, the pyramid and the tetrahedron. The first 2 are 2-D, and the others 3-D. The pyramid consists of 5 dots, the square and tetrahedron are both made of 4 dots.

Magic Sword(s)

Good morning Archdruid Emeritus!
I had been working with the DMH for a few months now after spending a little over a year with your Golden Dawn material. I have acquired a sword to use for the solitary grove ritual and I was wondering:

1) Is it a conflict of energies (or otherwise acceptable) to consecrate this sword as a magic sword per Circles of Power and still use it to open a grove.

2) If not, would it be alright to rework the ceremonies for the wand, cauldron, and crane skin bag for a grove sword, or is there some other procedure?

3) Do you have any ideas for a Druidry specific banishing implement (like a hand scythe maybe?) or is roughly banishing spirits like that a bit outside the oeuvre of Druidry?

Thanks so much!

In regards to the grove sword, would I do a similar ritual for consecration or is the peace sword not necessarily need a formal consecration?

Also I’m assuming that even if I have experience with Golden Dawn style work, mixing tools is more or less a poor idea.

Tarot Reversed

Hi JMG,

Do you have a general rule, or guideline, for how to interpret the cards of a Tarot draw when they are reversed?

Also, would it be legitimate if I, having long incorporated reversed interpretations into my daily three-card draws, discontinued incorporating them? Though I'm relatively new to using them (Rider-Waite) for Divination, my experience thus far is that the reversed cards lead me to confusion and difficulty forming an interpretation of the draw's overall message. Or will I miss something by not considering the reversed positions?

Thanks!

Could you recommend a good book on discursive meditation? I'm thinking of taking it up; after having read your series of articles on this site on the same, I was excited and wanted to explore more. I would especially appreciate a book whose copyright has expired and can be legally downloaded for free.

So nice to see a photo of John Gilbert!

Question this week about the early German Pietists, Kelpius in particular. What is the relationship between them and the Rosicrucians? I was at Kelpius's cave in Philadelphia and saw the Rosicrucians put a marker there to him. I find the diversity in early American faith practices so interesting. It certainly wasn't the Pilgrims version we were given in school.

Tangential to this, but I highly recommend visiting Ephrata Cloister if you can make it over that way. Make sure you also take the guided tour as it is the only way to get inside the buildings. The chapel still holds a strong spiritual charge even hundreds of years since it was regularly used by the members of the group (which was part of the early Germanic Christian occult movements in the US).

Good morning, everyone and JMG! Happy Monday! How everyone had a nice weekend. 😁

Last Monday I had asked you about why during the FHR opening the elements go around the altar from least dense (air) around to most dense (earth) and you has suggested I meditate on this and come to my own conclusions? I have been thinking about this all week and I have some observations.

In the Cabalistic Cross the Latin Cross shape is used - this is described in CoP as (among other things) a symbol of spirit taking matter up into itself.

In the LBRP, when doing the elements and visualizing the angels, it goes Air, Water, Fire, Earth. If you map this on a piece of paper it forms a Greek cross. CoP says (among other things), that it is equal and equally participating in union. Then after that the hexagram is visualized, to establish the system of elemental powers and then rise above it. It’s an outward movement followed by upward movement.

So, in the FHR opening, we go around and do the elemental purification. Then the Divine Presence is invoked, then the Temple is declared open and the Sun has arisen - wouldn’t that constitute the outward movement (elements) followed by upward (rising sun)?

But there’s something else here (probably several somethings I haven’t thought of yet). Cabalistic Cross makes the Latin cross, LBRP makes a Greek cross. When you look at the FHR purification of going around the elements in a circle, but doing it from least dense to most dense, to me that would suggest a downward spiral shape from the heavens to earth.

A number of weeks ago at Magic Monday I asked if the opening and closing prepared the subtle bodies for initiation and you said yes so I had a gander at the initiation ritual (Grade of Seeker). I can’t help but notice that after the Sign, Grip, etc are given the magician then goes around the elements (Officers) again BUT this time begins from Earth and works around to Air. What I’m thinking is - is going from least dense to most dense like call spiral stair case down, and then starting at most dense to least dense like going up that same spiral stair case? I remember that the Opening and Closing in CoP had the spiral stair case and that visual seems to be sticking with me.

Sorry if that is too big of a wall of text! My official Magic Monday question is:

1) Am I on the right track? Do you see any glaring issues with this understanding that need to be corrected? Or am I way off base?

Thank you very much and thank you for posting the photo of John Gilbert as I’ve been getting curious about him with all this FHR work. Is there any place where I can read more about him? I did a web search but he didn’t seem to have an official web page I could see on the search engine I was using?

2. If you can talk about it, what were your most effective talismans for?

Pretty sure astro mage Cliff Low has on dozens of astrological talismans at once most of the time (he's said as much.) Of course, Chris Warnock doesn't think you even need to wear the talisman for it to be effective... (Cliff disagrees) (I don't know)

How about Dolmen Arch talismans created using the Gwyddon y Cylch instructions (awaken palm centers, then charge using color breathing)? And would it differ for basic color-breathing talismans or talismans created using the Secret Ritual of the Grail?

Interesting. Is it the visualization of nwyfre passing through your own body specifically that creates the link (in the DA procedure--I don't how how the GD stuff works.), or would that be the case for anything where you're trying to "move energy directly," as opposed to timing it to catch what's already coming down (astrological), rearranging objects to concentrate what's already there (natural), or asking someone else to do it (petitions and evocations)?

And I may have already told a friend I'd make one for him. Are there specific procedures to follow in this case? Is it generally better to just not share this sort of talisman?

If someone dies in an aircraft explosion so their body is completely destroyed, does their ghost fall back to earth? If so does it fall at normal speed and what happens when it hits the ground?

Does make me wonder, though. How do ghosts travel around? I recall that when my father died a few years ago, within minutes of his passing, my youngest niece (then 6 years old) felt someone tap her on the shoulder, but no one (visible) was near enough to have tapped her. My family mostly thinks this was my father's spirit because of the timing, and also some later experiences where he briefly appeared to my mother, and later she heard his voice call to her from the vicinity of his favorite chair in the living room. Do we know much about how those without the mortal coil travel or move about? From my family's experience, as well as some other stories, they seem to be able to transport themselves from one location to another with little or no travel time.

"completely destroyed"?

From: (Anonymous)
I think it is not so easy for a body to be completely destroyed, even in an aircraft accident. A funeral cremation takes more than a few minutes, and that's under ideal contrived circumstances. An aircraft explosion is very brief, and most likely when the aircraft is already hitting the ground. So, there is no room for the ghost to fall.

Leather as a cleansing tool?

Date: 2022-08-08 01:25 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hello JMG and all,
First I’d like to express my gratitude for the existence of this forum—thank you!!

My question today has to do with an experience I had about two months ago: I had a dream in which an elderly woman offered me a bit of advice, telling me to use fine grain leather to wash my face. She gave me an oval shaped piece of leather in the dream and I began to pull it across my face in circular motions. The leather pulled debris from my pores, until it got snagged on something between my eyebrows. The leather began pulling long strands of green goop from my forehead; the sensation was one of pressure being relieved.

About a week later I was digging a hole to plant a tree, and dug up an oval shaped piece of leather. Out of curiosity I held the leather up to my head and felt a strong magnetic sensation. I’ve held onto the piece of leather and use it to “clean” if i’m feeling particularly heavy minded or foggy.

Have you, JMG, or any other reader, come across any mention of leather being used in such a way?

For context this occurred in southern Ireland and the dream took place in an Irish countryside-type setting. Thanks again for everyone’s time and consideration.

Best wishes to all,
Cobalt Lily-livered Harpy

Hello and thank you!
When making the talisman from CoP, how important is the gold paint? Essential, or more like a “booster”?

Hi JMG,

Felicitations for Lughnasadh/Lammas for all those who celebrate it.

I have a rather strange question for this week. I know a few women who are making use of their menstrual blood for both ritual and artistic purposes. Aesthetically, I find this a little distasteful, but that's just me. As regards the ritual aspects, though, I do rather wonder if the warning on blood-sacrifices attracting parasitic entities also applies here. I'm not sure of the details of the rituals in question, but I believe at least some of them involve offerings of menstrual blood to the soil.

One final request, for any who feel moved to follow it: a beloved rowan tree, with whom I felt a very strong connection, was recently chopped down before I could do anything to prevent it. Any prayers and positive energy for its soul's onward journey would be acknowledged with gratitude.

Many thanks for hosting this forum once again!

Luke

The Dianics I used to hang with had an answer to that question, but it'd violate my initiation oath to tell it on a public forum. All I can say is, the Crone option is nothing too gross, unless you're a very bad germophobe.

An update on the rowan: I checked on it today - its suffered some really harsh damage, but I'm pleased to report that there are some buds springing up from the stump, so it may well make it. So prayers for a possible recovery would also be appreciated!

It may depend on the rituals quite a bit? I think some cultures see menses as a special time for woman so they may be mimicing this, the rituals usually contain protections to keep the connection between the woman and earth/moon etc clean.

John--

I am a member of a fraternal organization with which I very much wish to continue my association. There is a brother, a nice enough guy all-in-all, whose energy does not mix well with mine and from whom I seem to get energetic attachments (leeches?). Due to his circumstances, this brother cannot drive and I am often giving him a ride to and/or from our meetings as I live nearby. I wish to 1) remain a member, 2) provide this brother periodic assistance, and 3) protect myself from whatever (astral?) stuff is going on. Is there a basic protective amulet or similar protective magic that would be appropriate here?

I see, well Chris Warnock has previously recommended it so I thought maybe. It was an important part of the whole kek thing apparently... the cover is an abstract frog... Packwood unpublished it two years after it was published (pub 2004?), so hard copies are very expensive, but it was released on kindle in 2019. Very interesting stuff, though I have my critiques.
