The image? I've decided to do another pass through magical personalities, and I figured I'd start with one of my own teachers. This is John Gilbert, with whom I studied the teachings of the Universal Gnostic Church, the Order of Spiritual Alchemy, the Modern Order of Essenes, and the Magickal Order of the Golden Dawn -- this last, of course, is the parent body of the Fellowship of the Hermetic Rose. This photo was taken in 2008 in eastern Tennessee at a Druid event there; it was the last time John and I met in person, though we corresponded via email and talked on the phone quite a bit after that.
I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use the button above to access my online tip jar. Date: 2022-08-08 03:39 pm (UTC)I've got two questions
1)What's a good introduction into the rosicrucianism, should i just start with the three original books?
2)This one will be stupid: Can one use magic to alter one's tastes? For example, i hate fish, but i want to start liking them, because they are healthy and all that. What can be done?
My ESL instincts force me to apologize for my bad english
(no subject)
Date: 2022-08-08 06:47 pm (UTC)2) It's not stupid at all. If you want to change your tastes, you need to find out first why you have them; I recommend journaling for that. Simply write down, say, "Why I Hate Fish" and then write down anything and everything that comes into your mind in response. If there's some kind of emotional issue connected with fish, you need to deal with that before you can change your tastes. Once you've done that, try different kinds of fish cooked in different ways, as far as possible from the way you've eaten it in the past, and as you eat it, repeat silently to yourself, "This is really tasty." You'll find after a while that it is.

Date: 2022-08-08 03:45 pm (UTC)Looking at various types of applied astrology, applying aspects represent things to come, while separating represent things already passed. In natal astrology, some say that the latter represent things carried over from a previous incarnation, while the former are things more likely to come into being in the current incarnation. I know you don't focus on natal astrology primarily, but does that sound like a reasonable claim to you? I'm trying to sort out the meaning in my own natal astrology practice, that's why I ask.

Date: 2022-08-08 04:25 pm (UTC)1. I'm not sure if I'm misremembering, but did you say a publisher was coming out with more affordable copies of Mouni Sadhu's Concentration and Meditation soon? When might that be?
2. How does suffering pain interact with karma? As I understand karma from your comments, karma is not a moralistic "bad people (according to whom?) have bad things done to them" rule, but a law of cause and effect. Take actions to show generosity to the world, and you create a more generous world, and thus benefit from a generous world showing generosity to everybody including you. You've said that pain and suffering, such as dying in an agonizing way, "burns off" bad karma and lightens the load for the next life, and some Indian writers write highly of enduring physical strain and pain in order to clear karma, such as lugging boulders up a mountain to clear away a karmic funk. How does that work? Wouldn't this kind of pain and suffering only work to balance equivalent pain and suffering? If I regularly beat people up so their bones were broken, suffering excruciating bone cancer pain would balance that karma, but physical agony wouldn't balance out stealing from poor people or telling hurtful lies, since those generate emotional pain, despair and poverty rather than physical pain. How does suffering work to burn away karma?
Re: Karma
Date: 2022-08-08 06:52 pm (UTC)2) Physical wrongdoing is repaid through physical suffering. Emotional wrongdoing is repaid through emotional suffering. We all have plenty of both to pay off, and of course the process of dying in an agonizing way involves emotional as well as physical suffering...

He welcomes spiritual and magical assistance (his name is JJ Freeman, if including a name helps).
2) I'm curious if you've worked with the spirits of the twelve hours of the Nuctemeron in Levi's Doctrine and Ritual or have any insights into them, and if they are useful for evocation.

Date: 2022-08-08 05:07 pm (UTC)First I will start by saying thank you for the maintenance of this unique public good.
Long time reader here, do post every now and then. I wanted to comment on an specific experience, and ask if you have maybe some ideas as to what might be happening.
I have a talisman, a lapis lazuli with some pyrite ring, created on a nice election for Jupiter on Piscis. Got help from Chris Warnock and Clifford Hartleigh low and was very pleased with the ritual, as I painted, used a specific incense for suffumigation. I am also happy with the results, and I have made in total 3 talismans (2 on Jupiter and one for Spicca).
I also practice usually before bed an QC LBRP MP QC, with some mediation. I did it very regularly or one year, but this past year I have done it a little less regularly.. as I had bee getting into astrology and have been busy with work which has become a little too much... Still last two nights I went back to my ritual with eagerness as I could feed a sense of anxiety creep up, and remarkable tingling, first night on my solar plexus, second night on my forehead happened after the ritual until I slept. So yesterday night after my ritual, I thought ok, I will sleep and also wear my talisman as maybe I can be in a better energetic space to let it play an effect. And it did, but in a very particular way. I woke up almost immediately after dozing off, with this strong rush of energy which made me jump out of bed... and this went on to happen 3 times during the night. I had also vivid dreams tho i cant remember them. This electric like feeling wasn't particularly uncomfortable, but it certainly wasn't conducive to resting.. but I never sensed anything negative out of it.. still, early in the morning I took the ring off and slept like a rock. Given your extensive knowledge, how would you interpret this experience (other than maybe, the energies within the talisman are not conducive for sleeping! but had such a distinct physical manifestation!)

Date: 2022-08-08 05:57 pm (UTC)It is exactly the right number for this kind of business endevor. If I had looked at the numerology first, I would have picked that number to aim for.
So I wondered, is this a common thing?
I remembered back in the numerology posts several ladies noted that their married names and maiden names had the same number. This seems rather similar to what I just experienced.

Date: 2022-08-08 06:01 pm (UTC)The odd little Pluto in Leo sub-cohort seemed to me to have been heavy on proto-hippies, (though a quick bit of research showed me that many of them, like the writers of Hair, were quite solidly Pluto in Cancer. Just goes to show that judging by one's own friends has its hazards.) But -
Pluto settled down into Leo June 14, 1939, and stayed there until 1956. That's WWII and the first A-bomb. Then throughout the late '50s, bounced back and forth between Leo and Virgo again, and was in Virgo from '58 to '71. Then Virgo to Libra from "72 to '83 (when it was "Morning In America!"... well, you get the idea. And was in Scorpio, its ruling sign, from 1984 to 1995.
And Sagittarius, 1995-2008. And is now in Capricorn.
I didn't run the table back to the dawn of Pluto's planetary existence and his 30-year prelude, but I would really like to see a comparison table between where Pluto was and what was going on in the world. Assuredly, 2008 was one of the turning points, at which we were definitely into the crisis. Analysis, if you please?

Date: 2022-08-08 07:21 pm (UTC)How long does planetary charity stay in effect? The reason I ask is this: At the beginning of this year you provided me guidance on how to do a planetary charity for hiring a new employee. And well, let's just say: T.S.W. After hiring that (excellent) employee in March, I just assumed the effect would "expire." Then about a week ago, it became apparent that we would need to hire another employee in a support role and create a new position for it. In all likelihood it was going to be a hard sell to my boss to provide funding for said new position, but a series of unlikely events made that happen almost effortlessly. It got me wondering if the planetary charity was still in effect.
What do you think? We have not put out the next job ad out yet, and I was wondering if I should do it again or not.

Date: 2022-08-08 07:27 pm (UTC)They do write well and it is an easy and interesting read. But it seems that they are going back and laying down an explanation over hand picked circumstances. I am very intrigued by their position that modern science is descended from Hermes Trimegistus and the Corpus Hermeticum.
Copernicus to Bruno to Galileo to Rosicrucians to Newton with quite a few stops in between.
If you have read it, I would love to hear your take on it. If you haven't read it, I can hope that you would shine a little light on modern science being descended from the Occult.
I'm not saying yes, but I am not saying no. Lots of stuff to look into before I can even be considered reasonably well read. Any light you can shine would be gratefully received.

Also, as of last week, I have a sudden appetite for raw vegetables and vegetarian dishes and an equally sudden and inexplicable aversion to hot showers. After a lifetime preference for Central European comfort food and really hot soaks, the change is quite surprising.
Do these things happen often with the Five Rites, or does your-mileage-may-vary apply?

Date: 2022-08-08 10:09 pm (UTC)For those unfamiliar, it is a theory (insofar as I understand it) that the North American continent was populated by an advanced civilization named Tartaria, and they point mostly to photographs of incredibly ornate architecture that no longer exists, of which the Chicago Worlds Fair of 1893 seems to be the most popular to speculate about.
I have not delved deeply into the theory (at least not yet) but it certainly has piqued my interest.
I’d be very interested in thoughts and views from the commentariat as well.

It's an exceedingly interesting belief system, and the fact that it doesn't happen to be true is the least important thing about it.

My partner was reading about what this means, and just read that often the partner in a relationship with someone who has ADHD often has to play the role of a parent as well as a partner.
On multiple levels, it explains a lot. If things are so stacked in this way that I have to grapple with the child archetype in myself, what challenge I am supposed to be facing in this life? To grow up? Are there myths I could read to figure this out? Any general advice?

Date: 2022-08-09 02:40 am (UTC)The Lower Heaven
Date: 2022-08-08 10:56 pm (UTC)I think my soul made an abrupt journey to the place I've seen referenced around here as The Lower Heaven, and I just want to be sure that I'm not mistaken about this.
The sojourn followed after a dream in which I died, and explained the due process of dying to the people around me. "Do not resist death; instead, welcome it in like an old friend. And be sure to fill your heart with as much joy as you can muster, as that will help to lift your spirit up and out." Which is exactly what followed. There was light, then I was light, the light had a sensation of movement, then I arrived at my destination, reconfigured into the familiar shape I am now.
I recognized this new place as the post-Earth decompression zone. An afterlife space that was purposefully created for souls freshly out of an Earth-based incarnation in order to help them shed off whatever lingering business they might still have. It was exactly like Earth as we know it now, except it was perfect. There is no time limit for being there. You are free to do whatever you please. And the atmosphere is so thickly saturated with...the Astral Light? (That's the closest thing I have to a working term for it) that manifestation is simple and instantaneous. "As it should to be!", is the thought I had after conjuring myself a plate of waffles.
Need I go into the beauty? The majesty? The healing power of being held in the loving source of manifestation? Or how about the haunting anguish of abruptly leaving that space, and then having to wake back up into a body, and then dragging that body to a job.
Such has been to focus of many, many journal entries.
I guess I'm also writing this sparse outline in case someone reading it might be looking for just one more teensy-tiny little piece of proof that the afterlife really does exist and that it's not all demons and judgement and morality. Nor is it like that in the second, farther afterlife. (The after-afterlife, if you will.) The place you eventually travelled to once you got everything out of your system and you were ready to move on, where the REAL spiritual work takes place. Even in the lower spiritual realm it's abundantly obvious that no harm would ever come to a soul there. The atmosphere itself is made of love.
This is assuming I'm not completely mistaken, of course :)
(oh, and if you're going to suggest I read Through the Gates of Death by Fortune, it's on the way!)

Date: 2022-08-09 02:42 am (UTC)question
Date: 2022-08-09 12:07 am (UTC)I wanted to ask you about divination. I've found it (primariy horary) very useful in my life; a few times, it's predicted things far into the future (nearly 1-2 years), which was absolutely unbelievable to me.
There are times when the answers haven't stood up (changing circumstances perhaps?), and i have gone back and forth on what exactly is happening. Sometimes, I feel that some of the answers are just reflecting back to me what I already think/know.
This makes me fear some sort of confirmation bias/mirroring of delusions/seeing want you want to see (something you'd mentioned happens with astral light, happened to even Steiner in his clairvoyance) in what divination shows.
What could you share about divination that you've learnt, and how to protect against this type of thing? How to keep things sharp? (I still think through things and have an active spiritual life so I hope that helps).

The bottom doors of the cabinet feature three dragons, one emerging from a cauldron.
The drawer of the cabinet features more faces with oak branches growing from their mouths.
The side supports each have a rather classic looking wizard with beard and tall hat.
Here is a link if you'd like to see the pictures yourself: https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/130200039_french-renaissance-revival-carved-oak-cabinet
My question is, do you think these symbols may have alchemical or occult meanings? The cabinet is from the same era as Levi. Were occult ideas fashionable enough at the time to make it into furniture?

Date: 2022-08-09 12:50 am (UTC)Another question about a rowan tree, above, prompts me to ask you about something that has been bothering me for a while. When I moved house a few years ago, I hired a gardener to clean up the garden and, while I was distracted and overwhelmed by other tasks, I didn't supervise as I should have, and to my horror, I found that he had removed a beautiful 30 yr old monstera plant that I had always loved. I don't blame the gardner; it was a misunderstanding, but I felt so bad about it because had I been paying attention, I would have prevented it from happening. Do you have any suggestions for how one might atone for such a thing?
