PythagorasLast week we discussed the first of the three numbers that play a primary role in numerological divination: the birth number, which represents the things in yourself and your life that you can’t change. This week’s lesson in numerology focuses on the other half of the equation:  the name number, which represents the things in yourself and your life that you can change.  As the label suggests, the name number is the sum of the numerical values of the letters of your name, reduced in the usual way to a number between 1 and 9, with 11 and 22 (and possibly other doubled numbers) as special cases.

The conversion of letters to numbers is handled as shown in the table below.  This is the Pythagorean set of letter values, and it’s one of two systems in common use in modern English language numerology—the other is the Chaldean, which takes its letter values from Hebrew. If you find different values in other books or online sources, no, you’re not confused; they’re probably using the other system. This is the one that I learned and that has always worked best for me, but of course your mileage may vary.

numerology tableThere’s a trap here, however, for those of my readers for whom English is a second language. The table shown above only works if your language has the same letters as English. If it doesn’t, you  need to find a different table. No, I can’t point you to one, but in theory all you need to do is write out your alphabet in its normal order and assign the letters to the numbers 1-9, repeating as needed. That’s the principle on which the Pythagorean system works. If English isn’t your native language, give your own language a try and see what you get.

With that settled, let’s go on to name numbers. Which name do you use as a basis for calculating your name number?  Whichever one you usually go by. Yes, this means that if you don’t like your current nane number, you can change your name number by changing what people call you.  Let’s say that your name is John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith, and everyone knows you as John Smith. That’s 1 + 6 + 8 + 5 + 1 + 4 + 9 + 2 + 8 = 44; 4 + 4 = 8.  If you don’t like having a name number of 8, you don’t have to keep it: start going by Jacob Smith, 1 + 1 + 3 + 6 + 2 + 1 + 4 + 9 + 2 + 8 = 37 = 10 = 1, and you’ve got 1 for a name number; go by J.J. Smith and you’ve also got a 1; go by Jay Smith and you’ve got a 6; or go by J. Jingleheimer Smith if you prefer that, and you’ve got a 5. And that’s without even doing a legal name change!

Yes, I know that rationally speaking this shouldn’t have the kind of effect that numerology claims it does. Let me whisper one of life’s great secrets in your ear:  the world isn’t rational. That’s why occultism flourishes in every age and among every people:  it deals, as rationality can’t, with all the places where human reason trips and falls flat on its nose in dealing with a universe too vast and complex for our minds to process.

Take the few minutes you need to calculate your name number, taking the name you normally use as the basis for the calculation. When you’ve finished, we’ll go on.

*  *  *  *  *

Got your number?  Excellent. Now we’ll discuss what it means.

As your birth number represents the lesson you came into this life to learn, your name number represents the methods and strategies you’re using to achieve it. You can use any name number to meet the challenges of any birth number, though some work together more easily than others! (To know how a name number will influence a birth number, add them together and consider what the sum means—we’ll discuss this in more detail later on, when I post about adding numbers and interpreting the results.)

The name number is also known as the number of development.  There are nine birth numbers, and also the special numbers 11 and 22. We’ll take them one at a time.

If your name number is 1, your best strategy is always to get moving, make things happen, and deal with problems as they come up. Don’t try to plan out everything in advance—that’s not your strong suit. Instead, hit the ground running, choose the best opportunity you see, and stick to that. Avoid speculative ventures or long range projects, take each day and each project as it comes, and move straight ahead to your goals.  You have the energy, courage, and ambition you need to succeed; you are likely to make plenty of money, though you also tend to spend it just as easily. Keep moving and deal with problems as soon as they come up, and you’ll be fine.

If your name number is 2, you are good at planning and you have the potential for excellent judgment, but you lack the initiative to take the lead and make things happen. You have a changeable disposition that can leave you subject to mood swings and vagaries of action, and if you let this get the better of you, you will land in trouble. Instead, focus on expressing your naturally friendly and agreeable qualities, avoid arguments, and remember that patience and careful judgment are your strengths. Choose friends and associates who can take your advice and guidance and do something with it, and beware of sentimentality, which will lead you into unhappy relationships, failure, and spitefulness.

If your name number is 3, you have the capacity to become a jack of all trades and a master of some. You tend to be impatient with things that you think are small or trivial; rein in that habit and pay attention to the subtle details, and you will achieve much. You have a gift of self-confidence that will help you, but be careful not to let it go overboard and lure you into making promises you can’t keep, or thinking you know more than everyone else! Learn to take advice from others, and focus on making the most of situations where your versatility and quick thinking can shine, and you will flourish.

If your name number is 4, you have a talent for hard work and reliability that can take you very far indeed. Your steadiness and dependability make you a valuable friend, partner, and employee. Choose your path with care, after adequate time to research and reflect, but once you’ve chosen, move steadily toward your goal and you can achieve almost anything you can imagine. You will attract friends, though you will need to be careful to avoid people who simply want to exploit your dependability for their own benefit. Remember to learn new things as you go, and don’t let yourself fall into the common 4 habit of underestimating your own capacities—you can accomplish much more than you think.

If your name number is 5, you have an independent mind and shine best when working by yourself. You find it easy to learn from experience but hard to take advice or apply the lessons of others. You will be most successful in life if you can make it an adventure, for change is essential to you and risk adds spice to your experiences. You will have to work to overcome your restless nature when steady work is required, but if you do this you will excel. You are naturally lucky, but don’t count on luck carrying you through every obstacle, because your luck is as unsteady as the rest of your life. A little ordinary caution and some practical preparations for trouble will help stave off the risks involved.

If your name number is 6, you have a gift for making people like and trust you. Follow through on the promises you make to them, respond to their trust and loyalty by being loyal to them in return, and you will attract them to whatever you do—as customers if you are in business, as students if you teach, as supporters in you go into politics, or what have you. Integrity is your great strength, while your great weakness is the temptation to take the love and loyalty of others for granted. Avoid drastic changes and radical action, remember that each day builds momentum that will pay off in the long term, and you can rise very high in the world.

If your name number is 7, you have the capacity for original thought and deep reflection. You will do best in a situation that makes use of your mind and your creative talents. Learn to plan your activities in advance and move step by step toward your goals, and always take the time to think through every important decision before you make it, and you can accomplish great things. Your great weaknesses are depression, on the one hand, and a tendency to chase impractical daydreams on the other; focus your efforts on things you can reasonably hope to accomplish, and remember that you will need help from others if you wish to achieve financial success, since you have no natural talent in that direction.

If your name number is 8, you have the capacity to achieve great things in business or in any practical field, and if you want to make money you can do so—though you will have to work at it.  This is a number of hard work and big plans, and it requires you to set realistic goals for yourself and pursue them over the long term. You will need to learn how to tell the difference between real opportunities and illusory ones, for not every door you encounter leads to success; if you learn from the experiences of others you can avoid many problems. Jealousy and self-indulgence are your great weaknesses; think big and enlarge your heart to make room for others, and you will do well.

If your name number is 9, you have the capacity for great accomplishment in at least one field of activity, but you will need to set your sights high if you are to fulfill that capacity. Drudgery and boredom are very difficult for you to tolerate. Your great weaknesses are pride and arrogance, which can lead you into self-defeating behavior. Strive to live up to high ideals and to be fair to others, and you will avoid that pitfall. This name number can lead to great success or great failure; you will need to work harder to achieve the former and avoid the latter than most people, though you can succeed if you give others the same respect you give yourself.

If your name number is 11, you have the keen judgment of a 2 combined with the capacity for decisive action. This will tend to surface spasmodically—that is, you may go for years living life as a 2, suddenly accomplish something that relies on decisive action, and then settle back to the relative calm and balance of a 2.  Choose your goals carefully, think through all the details of your plan, and be sure of your timing, and you can accomplish your goals.  Pay attention to intuition and inspiration as sources of guidance, and consider learning and practicing one or more of the occult sciences—they will benefit you.

If your name number is 22, you have the capacity to venture into unexplored fields of thought and action. As a name number, this is the mark of the eccentric and the genius, but it can also be the number of the misfit and the misunderstood failure. The patient discipline and capacity for work that characterizes the number 4 is essential, and must be cultivated in order to put your unusual talents to good use. Focus on practical results rather than airy abstractions, or you risk overvaluing your ideas and becoming one of the legions of unsuccessful cranks.

*  *  *  *  *

So there you have it. Take the time to think about your name number and see how well it fits the way you habitually tend to deal, or not deal, with the events and challenges of your life. If you have the chance to work out the name number of other people you know well, do the same thing. Always remember that your name number is only one of the numbers that numerology uses to understand your life; it needs to be assessed alongside the birth number, and certain other, minor numbers to give a complete picture—and then the time number needs to be factored in to see how the number influences are working at any given point in your life. In the next installment, we’ll discuss how to use the time number to make sense of every day and every year.

It turns out the name I use is an 11. I have a feeling there will be a few more elevens because of the seemingly high amount that were in the birth number.

I can't say I'm a fan of 11, so thank you for the suggestion of simply using an initial or my middle name!

Hi JMG,

Thank you for continuing the numerology series. In keeping with today's topic, I opened up the newly released Purdue translation of Agrippa's 3 Books of Occult Philosophy, looking up something else, and fortuitously landed on this quote from Chapter 21:

"A name change is also sometimes conducive (to this genius) because the qualities of names are indicators of themselves, just as a mirror declares the conditions of forms. It thus happens that changing a name often makes a change in the thing (to which the name refers). Hence, it is not without cause that the holy scriptures introduce God, while he blessed Abram and Jacob. He changed their names, calling one Abraham and the other Israel." Offhand, do you know what the hebraic numerology had to say about these name changes?

After calculating the different permutations of my legal name, I came to 4 different options: 1, 4, 8 and 11. The 4 and 11 are the ways I've generally presented myself, and those descriptions seem quite apt.

Funny enough, also looking back at my history, I was better known by 2 different nicknames in different periods of my life, both of which also ended up being 11's. Highly decisive and mutable periods.

What combinations of birthdate and name #'s do you see as particularly difficult? For example, I have a birth date # of 7 and can go by a name number of 4 or 11. In this system, it would read as "trying to obtain wisdom via reliable hard work" or "tryng to obtain wisdom by well informed, decisive actions at the appropriate times". These options both seem pretty compatible with the life destiny. Is that a correct interpretation?

One last thought. This series really seems reflective of your ongoing discussion on Eliphas Levi, especially in his disection of the tetragrammaton. As we're the reflection of God, as per Genesis, our birthdate # is the initial impetus, our name # as the free will given the bounds of our birth, our time # as the result of those two forces meeting leading to the experience of the personal year #. I'm sure you could also analogize each number Kabbalisticly as well, going from fire to earth following the same schema. A lot to chew on!

For speakers of Chinese and other languages that use Chinese characters to write names, I'd wonder if the best course of action would be to use the characters' stroke counts, since that's roughly as significant (used to order dictionaries etc.) as alphabetical order is in alphabet-based languages.

I admit I like the idea of the name number being one that you can change, as opposed to other systems where the name your parents gave you is a brand that you will carry for the rest of your life whether you like it or not (I know my mother would like to think that's the case, I disagree).

I did a full legal name change. Originally I was an 8, I can't say that ever had an opportunity to reflect in my life (but I was young). Now, using just the first and last name it's a 1, adding in the middle makes it a 3. This wasn't a name I came up with entirely on my own but was given to me by a god a long time back. Initial thoughts are, in it's capacity as a 1, it could potentially be a decent balance to my 7 birth number and its tendency to get lost at the thinking stage and never actually get around to doing anything (not that that's working out so well right now, but I could see it).

Additionally, if I can go back to last week's post, I saw several people commenting that their birth number matches up with their birth chart fairly well. Is there anyone else, and is it at all common, to have one that doesn't and yet is accurate anyway, or more accurate? Unlike maybe many others here I've never had my birth chart done by an actual person (not sure I could afford it), and until recently had a pretty low opinion of astrology which has been rehabilitated by seeing what you do here (thank you for that). The low opinion comes from having a sun sign that doesn't reflect who I am at all (unless it's manifesting in some very specific off brand sort of way) and years of being very unimpressed with the comments I would get from astrology buffs whenever I dared type that on the public internet. I can't tell you what shape Saturn is in my chart, it doesn't rule any of the significant signs, and I remember it's conjunct Jupiter and both of them are retrograde, which I assume isn't wonderful. And yet the numerology was accurate.

Does that happen often? And anyone else in my boat?

If I go by my usual name, the number is 8. If I change it, I can get a 3. Would it be workable to go by one name in one area of my life and by the other in another, based on where each number might prove most useful?

I just wanted to ask that. You beat me to it.

Consider, also, that institutions have a tendency to give you names regardless of your opinion (and in the book of Genesis, it is a standard interpretation that Adam was given power over other beings in the Creation the moment he began naming them). How would you go around a bureaucracy that insists in naming you Mr. X, where X is your father's lastname?

=================
And, because I could not help it... NEO is an 8, MR. ANDERSON is a 5. "You will have to work to overcome your restless nature" is not nearly as useful to said character as "You will need to learn how to tell the difference between real opportunities and illusory ones, for not every door you encounter leads to success"... just saying ;)

Very much continuing to enjoy the series!

Three brief questions:

1) I notice this post does not include the planetary rulerships - was this intentional, as they don't apply to the name number, should we assume the same rulerships as the birth numbers, or is that a fantastic theme for meditation?

2) Speaking of meditation, I assume the unifying "character" of each number across birth, name and time interpretations would make a decent set of meditation themes, or is that a red herring? (E.g. "What is the same between a birth number 1, a name number 1, and a time number 1?")

3) Any idea if these descriptions would apply to organizations, websites, publications, and so forth? Practical example: would we expect "jmgreer.org" to have a different path to success than "johnmichaelgreer.org"?

Oh, I lied, one more question that popped into my head right after I hit post:

Does any of the literature reflect any influence from first and last name separately? Might you expect folks who go mostly by their first name or a nick name to have different approaches than those who go mostly by their last? (E.g. "James" versus "Captain Kirk", to use one of your favorite fictional examples).

My birth number is a 1, and my name number is a 1.

Is there some connection between the Eternal Child archetype and the Sun? The description of the 1 for the birth number in some ways reminds me of a child, and my birth chart also expresses a childlike quality. I keep running into this archetype in me!

But I like the approach described by my name number, it's almost improvisatory. And it does funnily enough correspond to how I approach life.

My name is an 8, and I can easily make a 4 or a 5 using my middle name. But of those options, 8 sounds good enough for me and requires no change.

Adding it to my life number of 9 gives me another 8 for the combination. Does the combined number offer any additional guidance?

of course I end up as a 5

Once again, wow. Seven is my name number and a highly accurate description of my life and temperament. Amazing.

This is I think part of why The Dolmen Arch is working out so well for me. Planning my activities is making a big difference in filling out my development. Doing the same now with nutrition and fitness to good effect.

While I could use these attributes to great benefit with database development and analysis, cubicle life did not in the end make a good fit. Even developing software for myself became unsatisfying. Guess it is an old stone library with an attached observatory on a hill near the ocean for me. Doesn’t seem unreasonable at all!

My birth number was really accurate, but my name number is not at all! I got a 6, and I am terrible with people given that I have always had trouble making and keeping relationships. My husbands name number does not match him either. But the funny thing is, if we swapped numbers they would match us perfectly!

11 for name, 33 for birth.

Quick questions

1) If someone is known as 'Jonno' or 'Wazza' or 'Red' by all their mates but as say 'Brother Smith' at their church - is that reflective of different methods and strategies you would have to apply in the different settings to fulfill your current life's task?

2) If you changed your name from Dayne to Dain or Stephen to Steven but everyone just keeps calling you the same thing (most having no idea you had made the change) would that have the same effect?

3) and re 2) if you did change it - does it have to be legally or just 'this is now how I identify myself' in your own mind/heart?

Interesting fact - "Adolf Hitler" adds up to 11 (1+4+6+3+6+8+9+2+3+5+9=56=11). He was known for decisive action and interest in the occult, if not for keen judgment.

I've been doing the "I don't get it" squint for 10 minutes now. None of these seem to make me say "yes, that's me!" The depression of 7 seems to fit, and 7 is the number of all my full names, but every time I've tried to plan out my days I've run out of energy or unforseen complications mess up my careful plans and I find I get more done with a 1 strategy. My name that everybody knows me by (shorter version of first name + last name) is a 3, but I've never had any trouble obsessing over details. Can you elaborate on what "a gift of self-confidence" means for 3's like myself? I don't feel very confident in my ability to focus and get off my butt and do the work I know needs to be done.

If it's ok for me to ask a more general numerology question,

How important is the planetary rulership part? Would activities that fall under a particular planetary rulership be relatively favored on that planet's day? (As a secondary element, in the context of the number's meaning you gave.)

I've been having a great time with both the daily numbers and the horary numerology, but I've been wondering about that bit in a few cases. I was comparing martial arts schools and got an 8 for one and a 5 for the other, for example, and was thinking about if the Mars rulership might benefit the second.

My birth number is 7 and my name number is 7. Guess I'm slated to brood on an onyx throne somewhere.

I was pondering the parallels between my birth chart and my birth/name numbers. In my chart, both Sun and Saturn are in Libra, in a stellium near the Imum Coeli. It makes me feel like I can glimpse an intention behind when and where I was born.

Am I connecting dots that should not be connected? Does anyone else ever get that feeling?

Hello JMG,

My signature consists of letters corresponding to 3119 (my full name's initials), but then I add a stylised seven over the whole thing, i.e. with the upper stroke of the number covering the four letters, and the middle stroke of the number going through the latter three (I use a continental European style of the number).

Does my name number then still is 3+1+1+9=14=5, or do I have to add the 7 to it? Or should I just use the version of my name that I use in email signatures or when I have to enter my name in a list?

Thank you so much for your help and work!

Cheers,

So, _this_ is interesting. When I calculated my name number, I actually calculated two (well, four, the combination of two first names and the presence or absence of the last name, but it turned out that each first name on its own had the same final number as that first name combined with the last name) due to not being entirely sure what name _would_ count as the one I usually go by.

The one that I thought more likely to be it was my commonly-used version of my birth name; in addition to various people knowing me by it, it's on various pieces of paperwork and whatnot (some of those might use my full name, but since no one commonly _calls_ me my full name, I wasn't expecting it to be that). That, with or without my last name, gave a 3.

Thing is, when I got down to the entry for 3 in your list, it didn't seem to fit me all that well. Oh, I can sort of stretch it, but it didn't really click. When I got down to _7_, though, _that_ seemed to fit rather well, if still not perfectly -- and I was looking particularly at 7 because it was the _other_ number I'd calculated, for a name I've so far used mostly, if not entirely, online (though I've also idly speculated some before about changing my name to it under certain conditions).

And thinking more on the meanings of the two numbers, I _think_ I may spot a stronger presence of 3 further back in my life... before I was using the name giving a 7. I'm not sure when the changeover point was.

So, given that I think I can still see a bit of 3 in me, and 7 isn't a perfect fit (not that I would expect it to be truly perfect even if there was no ambiguity about it being the one for me -- the universe, as you say, is not obliged to fit itself neatly and uniformly into human categories, and I noticed in another comment you said there are some people for whom this system doesn't seem to work at _all_), I'm wondering if multiple names being close in usage can lead to multiple numbers having simultaneous partial effects. Whether that's the case or not, though, I think I may have just discovered that the name I usually go by was not what I had at least consciously thought it was.

Useful for all sorts of things, this numerology! Thanks for the series of posts, and I look forward to more of them.

(Also, I just tried an alternate spelling of the name giving a 7. Turns out, it _also_ gives a 7. And that alternate spelling is my current _middle_ name, which no one calls me on its own, as far as I know, but which _is_ on various pieces of paperwork as part of my official legal name. But since spelling _is_ important here, I'm not sure whether that's having its own direct effect added to the mix, or if it's just an interesting feature of the situation...)
