Sun sign astrology -- "all Geminis are X, Y, and Z" -- is cheap commercial garbage. Your sun sign is just one of nine planetary positions, and has to be taken in the context of all the others, plus house placements, plus aspects. For what it's worth, my sun sign is a very poor indication of who I am, too -- but my whole chart is a very good portrayal of who I am, and also does a good job (through annual progression) of predicting what happens to me.
Numerology has the huge advantage of being very simple, and so it's easy to learn and use. It doesn't work for everyone, but it does seem to work a lot more often than not.
