Aeon Byte logoFor some reason my about-to-be-released book The King in Orange: The Magical and Occult Roots of Political Power is getting more than the usual amount of interest from the podcasting community.  (Partly the publisher, Inner Traditions, is doing a very good job of scaring up prospects, but I think it's more than that.) Here's the latest, a two hour interview with Miguel at Aeon Byte Gnostic Radio; the first half is free, the second is for subscribers. We had a good lively talk; Miguel's summary is spot on:

The general opinion in trad occult circles is that the next great culture (in Spengler's sense) to rise will be in Russia, and should begin to get under way around the end of this century. There will doubtless be others elsewhere.

That's been widely discussed in occult circles for a long time. The idea is that new civilizations rise in the borderlands of old civilizations; Russia -- and especially the Volga River basin -- is on the fringes of European culture, where it blends into Asiatic influences and the lingering echo of Byzantine culture. Later on -- the standard estimate is around 2600 AD -- another such culture will begin to rise in North America; predicted locations vary but my guess is the Ohio River basin and the Great Lakes littoral will be the heartland of the new culture. There will doubtless be others; I've long thought that southern Africa and the region of Latin America where Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil come into contact are also likely locations for great cultures to emerge.

Not sure if you still check comments to posts a few days old, but if you do, I'm struck curious by you mentioning that others in trad occult circles have discussed Russia as the next great civilization and North America, etc. after that. Are these other people ones who might be recognizable and/or have published writings in their name?

Well, how well do you know the Theosophical and post-Theosophical authors in early 20th century occult circles in Europe and the US? HP Blavatsky was among those who talked about the rise of a Russian great culture in the near future and Katherine Tingley was one who talked about the emergence of an American great culture further out. (They didn't use that terminology -- the labels in those days were "root races" and "sub-races," because you could still use the r-word back then -- but the concept is the same; I translated it into Spenglerese to make it easier for people these days to understand it.)

Not at all, only heard of the Theosophical Society through your occult history posts on your main blog so far. I still am just occult-curious at this time, despite my pretentious username. Nevertheless, thanks for the name drops - when I start exploring occultism more, I have some names and their work to look up later in my practice. Thanks!

Speaking as an outsider who has spent time there:

There is a fairly intense and seemingly healthy spiritual substrate to Russian culture/society. It's unutilized outside of physical culture type movements at the moment, and more obvious problems currently cover it over. I've seen some really innovative stuff in martial arts from there, that unfortunately never seems to make it west. There is a thriving occult underground that the church, hilariously, seems more wary of than opposed to. The culture is already distinctive enough that some people are willing to argue they aren't "really" European; so it isn't difficult, for me at least, to imagine that as the basis of a new civilization.
