City of HermesThe first of two volumes of my collected essays is now out from Aeon Books! The City of Hermes includes all my published essays from 1993 to 2000, the years when my involvement in Hermetic occultism was at its peak and I was afire with a vision of a renewed Hermeticism based on the Golden Dawn tradition but enriched with the additional tools and practices of Renaissance Hermeticism. The essays in this volume are:
  • The Fifty Gates of Understanding
  • Meditation in Magical Practice
  • The Magical Lodge
  • Ars Memorativa: an Introduction to the Hermetic Art of Memory
  • The Hall of Thmaa: Sources of the Golden Dawn lodge system
  • The method of judging questions according to Peter de Abano of Padua: a medieval handbook of geomancy
  • Geometries of the Sword
  • Hermeticism and the Utopian Imagination
  • Pythagoras and Western Magic
  • The Forgotten Oracle
  • Osiris and Christ: Powers of Transformation in Golden Dawn Ritual
  • Magic, Politics, and the Origins of the “mind-body problem”
  • The G.D. Elemental Grades: a new version
  • Swordsmanship and Esoteric Spirituality: an introduction to Gerard Thibault’s Academie de l’Espee
All of these were published in magazines and journals that no longer exist, and most of them cover elements of Hermetic occultism and Western esoteric spirituality you won't find discussed in many other places. Interested? Copies can be ordered direct from the publisher here

Congratulations on finding a publisher for a collection of essays that came out in magazines and journals that no longer exist, and which would be otherwise difficult to obtain or even find out about now that the Internet is so dominant.

There are other writers of nonfiction about specialized subject matter who have built up a body of short pieces whose publication is similarly scattered. I know at least one author in this position, who has a few books in print but does not blog. Do you have any general advice to give to writers like this, who might want to find new audiences or at least keep their thoughts preserved for posterity?

Do you know if this book is coming out in an ebook like A Magical Education did?

On a not-unrelated note, has your forthcoming book Merlin's Wheel been retitled The Mysteries of Merlin by your publisher?

Is Aeon going to have a hardcover for this book like they did for The Celtic Golden Dawn?

If they do, could you convince the to use the original, better title?

Thanks for the heads-up! Are there any plans for an ebook version of this?

And while we're on the subject of new books, any word on when The Weird of Hali: Arkham will be available?

The wife and I are currently re-reading "Blood of the Earth." It is sparking some interesting discussions.

Hi JMG,
Have you ever thought of anthologising the series of posts from the Well Of Galabes into a book ? I return to them often and I surely can't be alone in thinking that they were extremely insightful and worthy of publication ? Regards, Steve
