Polytheistic MonasticismI'm very pleased to announce the publication of Polytheistic Monasticism: Voices from Pagan Cloisters, edited by Janet Munin, a new anthology of essays by people involved in one way or another in the emerging world of polytheist and animist monastic life. Too many people think of monasticism as purely something done by revealed religions such as Christianity and Buddhism; au contraire, there were monks and nuns in ancient India and Egypt long before those other religions were born.

Over the last decade or two, as pop-culture Neopaganism hit its diminuendo phase, there's been a great deal of new interest in more traditional modes of polytheist spirituality, and that inevitably led some participants to look toward the sort of deep commitment to their spiritual paths that gives rise to monasticism -- and things unfolded from there. As far as I know this is the first attempt to sketch out the emerging movement that's resulted from that trend.

(Yes, I've got a piece in the collection, on the process by which the Ancient Order of Druids in America established its own monastic church, the Gnostic Celtic Church; it might be of use to others who are looking toward a similar process -- but frankly most of the other essays are more interesting.)

It's just been announced for release in the spring of 2022.  If you'd like a copy, you can preorder one in the US here, and in the rest of the world here

I saw an announcement of this just yesterday on Galina Krasskova's excellent blog, but I didn't know you had a contribution in it. It looks like a must-have for me, along with the Heather Soul Lore book you mentioned a few days ago.

How fascinating, I had no idea this was a thing! Did this do anything to update your thoughts about the role monastic communities may or may not play over the course of the long decline? Also, have any of these essays given you new data points on what characteristics are or are not required for a successful monastic community? (If I remember off the top of my head, you've said it seems to be a combination of something like celibacy, poverty, and strict schedules full of hard work).

This is very timely for me, as I have lately been pondering monasticism outside of a Christian context. Thank you so much for posting!

Has anyone counted how many religious communities there are which are neither Christian nor Buddhist?

I hate to recommend contributing to the support of Jeff Bezos, but a Kindle’s a Godsend if you have limited shelf space. They do last a lot longer than the company says, or at least mine has, so he won’t get MUCH of your money.

Hmm! Do you happen to know if there is a table of contents available to take a look at? I am potentially interested in buying this.

Interesting cover design choice. Is the implication that all polytheistic monastics are/will be attractive GQ models?

I think maybe they were going for that ectomorphic "Elven Mage" look?

Interesting contrast....

It's very, very difficult to find an appropriate image for "Polytheistic Monasticism" on a free Adobe site! This is the one the publisher chose of the two which were submitted. The other one was a side shot of a person in a gray robe and hood holding a large book and beads -- no face visible.

I was thinking about this three days ago! The Ordination Requirements of the GCC are very thorough and seems like quite the work. I liked very much the concept of the Hermitage of the Heart, even though the romantic idea of moving into a hermitage with brothers and sisters is very romantic and appealing, this sounds like a stable base that focuses on the essentials of monasticism.

How does 6-12 hours of uninterrupted prayer and contemplation look like? Does the contemplation also include walking while musing and such?

Can Magic fit into the life of a monk besides the basic uses like a cleansing and balancing ritual or is that a totally different path?

For me the 6 hour vigil to become a Deacon in GCC was six uninterrupted hours on the back porch with books, paper, pen, and the things I needed for the solitary grove ritual, with the door to the house locked and all the electronics in the house and turned off. I opened a grove, spent the next six hours meditating, reading, and writing, and then closed the grove and ended the ritual. That worked well enough, but for the 12 hour ritual I will go to a retreat center that is in the woods so I can also walk and contemplate in the woods away from the city.

I'm really looking forward to this book; thanks for posting it!

I'm also excited about the possible overlap or relevancy of the book I'm writing now, with regard this new book; I hope to publish mine before or around the same time as this book. My new book is Heathen Soul Lore: A Personal Approach, where I take the general concepts discussed in Book I of this series, Heathen Soul Lore Foundations, and offer guidelines for becoming more aware of, and 'growing' or attending to these souls on a personal level through methods of soul lore practice.

It seems to me that this is one, among many, good approaches one could take, when embarking on a new monastic path, as I am doing with it myself, according to my own concept of 'monasticism.'

And I guess I'll be different from other people here, and say that I do like the cover of this book. It exerts something of a hypnotic fascination for me, which I would attribute to my Saiwalo soul and its attraction to certain kinds of images!

If someone wants to read a polytheistic mystic’s writings on his collected personal religious experience, there is Aelius Aristides’ Sacred Tales, which the author compiles in six volumes some thirty years of revelatory dreams in devotion to Asclepius, dreamt while sleeping in his temple.
