Take a look at "Kim's game" in Rudyard Kipling's novel Kim (1901), chapter 9. It's a very effective way of improving both visualization and memory. (The novel, of course, is long out of copyright, and can easily be found on the web.) Wikipedia has an entry on "Kim's Game."
