About response to phone (or doorbell) ringing - I have trained myself to NEVER answer phone or door unless I am expecting someone or recognize the number calling.

I'm used to it by now, but if I am ever with someone else in a rare situation where my phone is on and rings, if I don't make a move to respond the other person often gets quite visibly agitated. (I've had other people go and pick up my phone for me if I make no move to answer - that was back in the days of land lines.)

You are right; we are trained to respond, salivate and answer as soon as the alarm ring goes off.

I was not aware of the heightened suggestive state after answering the ring, but it makes sense - phone calls after a ring quickly create a narrowed focus of attention which is a kind of trance.

If I said Yes by answering that makes me more likely to say Yes to what they say next, and if they start with the usual few questions (Am I speaking with x? Do you care about your family's health?) that usually have default Yes answers they've established a Yes set pattern that makes it harder to say no the longer the call goes on.

Just in general, saying No is much more difficult than saying Yes.
