Had been seeing reports here of facial swelling pretty regularly for the last 2 or 3 posts but never noticed it here in Manhattan, until a few days ago. Since then it seems noticeable in every 4th person I pass by, sometimes to an extreme degree, enough to still be noticeable when the person is wearing a mask or when I'm looking at their face from behind. Could
be because I started a job which has me walking around a lot more, but in any case certainly alarming.

I'd been more or less regarding the idea of a mass die-off in the abstract, but there was something in a recent Kunstler post that for some reason - the phrasing wasn't especially new or unique, didn't say anything I hadn't already read quite a few times - made it click. Now, when I'm out and about, the same thought keeps coming: all or most of these people could be gone in two years. It tends to nullify any feelings of hostility or resentment toward any of these clueless, neurotic denizens of the Financial District, where I do that job. What's left is a rather surreal feeling - not pity or even really tenderness or any sort of sentimentality - just a sense of awe that leaves no room for annoyance. I guess it's finally dawning on me how real the situation is.
