You said that nobody predicted this and you are right - since I am a nobody on the internet. But what I see is a continuation of the decline and collapse of an empire. I know you have changed your opinions since 5 years ago, but is it possible that you were right then? All the elements are there - the bitter partisan division continues while both sides ignore the real problems. My bet is that the little steps that Trump took to fix the problems will be reversed because he never got enough momentum in the spoiled entitles population (yes, even the poor are spoiled in US).
So it looks like we are back to business as usual for the next 4 years (maybe?) before the currency collapse and maybe the scenario you presented in "How it could happen".
Let me repeat: is it possible that we were just blindsided by hope and the empire collapse has a momentum of its own?
