get 'em in the groundWelcome back to Frugal Friday! This is a weekly forum post to encourage people to share tips on saving money, especially but not only by doing stuff yourself. A new post will be going up every Friday, and will remain active until the next one goes up. Contributions will be moderated, of course, and I have some simple rules to offer, which may change further as we proceed.

Rule #1:  this is a place for polite, friendly conversations about how to save money in difficult times. It's not a place to post news, views, rants, or emotional outbursts about the reasons why the times are difficult and saving money is necessary. Nor is it a place to use a money saving tip to smuggle in news, views, etc.  I have a delete button and I'm not afraid to use it.

Rule #2:  this is not a place for you to sell goods or services, period. Here again, I have a delete button and I'm not afraid to use it.

Rule #3:  please give your tip a heading that explains briefly what it's about.  Homemade Chicken Soup, Garden Containers, Cheap Attic Insulation, and Vinegar Cleans Windows are good examples of headings. That way people can find the things that are relevant for them. If you don't put a heading on your tip it will be deleted.

Rule #4: don't post anything that would amount to advocating criminal activity. Any such suggestions will not be put through.

With that said, have at it!

I travel for work a lot, often 2-3 weeks at a time. I check a bag and carry two carry-ons, so I have a bit of room (I need it for my safety gear). Most hotels have a microwave and a mini-fridge in each room; occasionally you'll have to go to the lobby to use a microwave. To save money and eat healthier, I carry a ceramic microwave plate for cooking meat, a ceramic noodle pot with a lid, and a french press for real coffee. So I go to the grocery store and get chopped vegetables, chopped meat, ramen, potatoes, salad fixin's, yogurt, sandwich bread, mayo, and deli meat & cheese, a few canned goods, a local good coffee roast, honey, and cream, and I'm fixed up for the week. I eat natto too, so I've ended up learning the locations of Asian grocery stores in locations as diverse as Huntsville, Buffalo, St. Louis, and Omaha (one of my favorites!).

I have searched in vain for a small electric hot pot or cooker that is 1) without nasty chemical non-stick coatings, 2) safe to use on a regular countertop, 3) not a piece of cheap, designed by a pyrophiliac, self-immolating Chinese junk. So, I consider using the room microwave the lesser of two evils.

A few other useful items: a water bottle instead of bottled water, a car coffee mug instead of paper cups, a big, folding, reusable shopping bag for dirty laundry instead of garbage bags, and laundry detergent that comes in dry sheets that I can slip into a ziplock bag.

I use a 1500w 12" stainless steel electric skillet for making hotel meals. It just barely fits into a carry-on suit case. I spent a fair bit of time finding something that didn't have Teflon coating or use plastic.

I also use a 500ml stainless steel electric kettle when traveling. Together they keep me eating healthy when I don't have access to a regular kitchen.
