I could imagine that's part of the Buddhist exercise where one breathes in the misery and suffering of others and breathes out healing? And why it's a not so clever idea to do it if you are not knowing what you are doing (i.e. are too inexperienced)?
More personally but without going into too much detail - a distant lesson of a former Karate teacher comes to my mind, relaying the meaning of the Japanese "osu" as "striving and suffering - it's wrong not to strive in order to avoid suffering". Slowly, a vision of the past and a landscape for the future opens up and I admit I am slightly scared and it seems I don't really know yet how to orientate myself, now that I know that landscape is out there.
