Magic Monday

DreamlandsMidnight is just a few minutes away, and so it's time to launch a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism, and with certain exceptions noted below, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question or comment received after then will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted.  If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 143,916th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.1 of The Magic Monday FAQ here

Also:
I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.  And further:  I've decided that questions about getting goodies from spirits are also permanently off topic here. The point of occultism is to develop your own capacities, not to try to bully or wheedle other beings into doing things for you. I've discussed this in a post on my blog.

The
image? I field a lot of questions about my books these days, so I've decided to do little capsule summaries of them here, one per week. The book above was my fiftieth published book and my eighth published novel. (Once I found a publisher that was willing to take a chance on my fiction, it came out in a rush, so we're going to be in tentacle land for a little while!) Miriam Akeley, a sixty-something college professor, was an important subsidiary character in the first two Haliverse novels, and took center stage in this one. As usual with these novels, I had no idea where it was going to end up and was astonished by some of the twists and turns.

One of the reviews this novel got finally succeeded in cluing me in about why my fiction leaves so many people baffled.  The reviewer thought it was a good story, but was completely floored by the fact that Miriam was, you know, an ordinary person, without superpowers or anything else that made her unlike the rest of our species.  That's when I realized that the reason so much of today's fiction sucks is that it's obsessed with the dreary fantasy of being the One Special Person around whom the whole world revolves. Me, I prefer stories about the rest of us. If you have similar tastes, you can order a copy here if you live in the US and here if you live elsewhere.

Buy Me A Coffee

Ko-Fi

I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use either of the links above to access my online tip jar; Buymeacoffee is good for small tips, Ko-Fi is better for larger ones. (I used to use PayPal but they developed an allergy to free speech, so I've developed an allergy to them.) If you're interested in political and economic astrology, or simply prefer to use a subscription service to support your favorite authors, you can find my Patreon page here and my SubscribeStar page here.

Bookshop logoI've also had quite a few people over the years ask me where they should buy my books, and here's the answer. Bookshop.org is an alternative online bookstore that supports local bookstores and authors, which a certain gargantuan corporation doesn't, and I have a shop there, which you can check out here. Please consider patronizing it if you'd like to purchase any of my books online.

With that said, have at it!

Re: What's in a blessing?

[personal profile] hearthculture 2024-10-28 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
1) Thank you for this; it helps me hone in on my problem. From the start, I've offered blessings with the intent that they can be turned down, "may you be blessed if you so choose) being the primary form it takes in my mind though the words often simplify to may you be blessed. My hangup at this point is that my mind gets hung up on even that simple phrasing - what is it that I even mean by blessing? How do I form a positive intention if I don't perceive or fully understand a being or situation? I may also have slipped into that space where you say and ponder something so many times that it loses meaning. Like writing a word the hundredth time and forgetting how it's spelled.

As I type this, I'm thinking about your post on Schopenhauer, and wondering if perhaps a way out of the quandry is to view blessing as just a moment of aligning my will with what I feel is powerful and beneficial and then focusing toward another in hopes that they benefit...

2) That makes sense, practically and helpfully. Thanks again.

Could you expand on the weightlifting angle here?

oh, hello! That we me :)

I wasn't going to post anything this week since I don't have any new questions to bring the the table, but you might find this book I found online somewhat helpful/interesting: The Evil Eye by Frederick Thomas Elworthy

https://sacred-texts.com/evil/tee/index.htm

Some dreams pointed me towards The Evil Eye as one of the primary modes of malicious workings and the whole subject is fascinating! This book is an in-depth look at it.

Also - I'm so sorry you have to have to deal with this. It's no fun

I'm piggybacking here, awkwardly.. but is there anything I can do with my energies to stop attracting partners. For some context, I'm newly single and wanting to be alone for some time in my life, and I only like to be in meaningful relationships but I'm attracting others embarrassingly.

Planar Cycling

... I have thought about posting this knowledge here for a few years. But since most of it has been self trained, intuitive, and extremely powerful I have avoided doing so. However I will respond to this query. Since the mid-nineties I have combined the focus and energetics of running, with imagination and will, for manifestation. You can start simple and safe, think sphere of protection while jogging on a nature trail. Then maybe move onto expanding your consciousness and charging your aura so you can be more beneficial in a social situation. I am unsure of the limits of this practice. Circumambulation is great, but seriously do a zone 2 exercise for 30 minutes with intention and then merge that into your casting. I have learned so much from these boards, and the occult knowledge of planar conceptualization has really improved my abilities. Thank you so much Mr. Greer.

Gods, Archetypes, and the Individuation Process

[personal profile] brenainn 2024-10-28 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I continue to work on my individuation. I've been praying to Jung now for a few weeks. At first, I could just barely discern even a slight feeling that he was listening and assisting. That's changed dramatically over the last week, and the process of individuation has really taken off in some unexpected directions for me. One thought that has occurred to me is selecting a specific divinity for many of the major archetypes that Jung and his disciples have discussed (Mithras or Christ for the archetype of the Self, a male and female divinity pair like Osiris and Isis for the animus and anima, etc.) and then working with them as well as I proceed along the path of individuation. Any thoughts on that?

An acquaintance of mine claimed that he used biofeedback to jack up his blood pressure during his draft physical back in the 1960s. Thus he avoided being drafted. Less creative and less informed, I enlisted in the Air Force -- but never went to SE Asia.

Affirmation Advice

(Anonymous) 2024-10-28 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi JMG,

I would be grateful for your advice on an affirmation. I practice the "healer" level of the MOE daily, and also practice reiki. The affirmation I'm playing with is "I am a competent energy worker." My objective is to improve as a healer, and since my concept of what I do is to channel energy, that's why I chose "energy worker" rather than "healer". What do you think?

One more question, if you will: My long-ago reiki teacher believed that once you engage reiki you can just keep your hands where they need to be but your mind can wander all over the place. Intuitively, this strikes me as not correct. In fact, it seems a tad disrespectful. I try to keep myself out of the "healing" energy component and just focus on being a channel, for both reiki and MOE. Do you have any opinion on this?

Thank you for your generosity is sharing your experience and your time!

In his "Experience of the Inner Worlds" Gareth Knight wrote: "We know of a case of a Methodist lady who disapproved of her son going out with girls and used to meet in prayer meeting with other members of her Christian congregation and pray that he be kept from such activities. The prayer was extremely effective and almost drove the lad neurotic, but we submit that it was more of the nature of Black Magic than the manifestation of the grace of the Christ." p.120. When I first read that passage, I thought he was describing my own mom. Do you know of any actual cases? My mom had gotten deeply involved with a denomination called "Pilgrim Holiness" and was going to the Wednesday evening prayer meetings and once she insisted I go with her. I have no memory of what transpired there, but my relations with females (in retrospect 60 years later) seem as if a spell had been placed on me. And I became a lifelong bachelor.

Re: Raising kids

[personal profile] hearthculture 2024-10-28 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm raising multiple curious kids and navigating these issues on a regular basis. No prescriptive advice, just what is working for us right now:

1. My two youngest are very interested in my daily rituals, though I normally do them before they wake. When I do them later, even in a secluded spot, one of them often finds me and wants to be near - similar to our cats who also seem drawn by the Sphere of Protection. I generally discourage my kids from hanging around my ritual work, though one in particular is very drawn to it, and is also quite energetically sensitive. He has asked to be taught the SOP but is still too young. I've opted for teaching him prayer, and visualizing light, essentially teaching some basic Modern Order of Essenes style clearing. All my kids are over 7 and they still struggle with sitting meditation, though we still try. I find that labyrinth walking works better, and better still is observational meditation. We have successfully worked with the nature observation practices from the Druidry handbook (like picking a square foot of ground and observing multiple times.)

2. Myself and other occult friends have recently been lamenting that we erred too far on the side of not indoctrinating our kids into our beliefs, discussing our beliefs and practices too little where it would have been better to discuss them as often as they were pertinent and on our own minds. I think this plays into the objects in the home. I have been working this past year on owning my spaces and pulling my sacred objects out of hiding. I increasingly believe in fully living my own beliefs, and offering my children the regular reminder that they are free to question, challenge, explore, and believe differently.

3. Multiple times, I was able to soothe a screaming baby in the backseat by visualizing them bathed in light, warmth, and love. I have also had success relieving nightmares with prayers to ancestors, guardian angels (whom I work with even without being a Christian,) and in extreme cases doing banishings in the bedrooms of the afflicted. We've also had success with dreamcatchers. For my family the spiritual protection works similar to the physical protection - we try to stay clean and balanced as parents and pay attention, when the kids talk or have fears, we listen and take them seriously.

Wishing you well!

I think tucking it into my belt would work very well. I was just worried about not having one of the ends touch me, but maybe this prohibition isn't so strict that it includes when the wand is not in hand or in use?

Another idea that just comes to mind is I could tie the drawstring of the wand's linen storage bag around my belt and have it hanging a sort of holster. Would that also work?

No resources from me sadly, though this is an intriguing project. I could imagine using numerology and color theory in your patterns to resonate with an intention - say warmth and protection from a scarf or hat, or courage and skill for work socks. Would also be interesting to make wooden needles from sympathetic woods and use them only for specific purposes. I guess all this falls under the use of natural magic and correspondences.

Pain for gain?

[personal profile] escorcher 2024-10-28 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi JMG and all,

Slightly strange question this but then I've had a weird last few days - I have a new pain syndrome that has come on this weekend. Although there is a tentative mainstream medicine explanation for it, I cant help feeling I've at least partially, subconsciously, enhanced and willed it on my myself. If you agree this is possible, is there anything in the magical way of life to help reverse this kind of self imposed manifestation of pain? I'm guessing it might be something to do with 'controlling or alligning the will'?

In this case it is linked to an irritated/damaged nerve and is not a thing totally new to me as I had weird double vision come on in 2014, and that officially led to a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (yes, the MRI saw lesions and that cemented the deal). The weird thing was, the vision pattern I had did not fit the official diagnosis of 4th nerve palsy. It was only a few months before my parents both died in quick succession, and I'm fairly sure it was linked with a subconscious response to the beginnings of that period. Calling it M.S. just feels like it only touches the surface. Does this make sense?

Thank you. JP

Re: Notion of God/Ultimate Source in Qabalah

[personal profile] hearthculture 2024-10-28 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This is sooo groovy. I've been playing with pascal's triangle quite a bit in relation to my Golden Section Fellowship work, finding ways to correspond the principals and SOP gates, and also looking at the planes of existence and the tree of life. One of my aha moments was in adding zeros to the triangle rather than starting from 1s. So that there is a single zero at the top, two zeros below, and then Zero One Zero below that (in a non-logical leap in which zero plus zero equals 1), and so one with the triangle. I envisioned that the trinity of zeros atop the pyramid were the divine realms we cannot know- the singlar naught becoming naught and not-naught and from that start, the whole triangle is framed in zeros representing the bounds of our perceptible existence. The teaching you reference near perfectly fits what I was reaching for. Where would be the best place to read more about this?
Maybe the Tree of Spirit? or Circles of Power? Or The Mystical Qabalah?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-28 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi JMG,

1. What is the difference between praying to your Higher Self versus your HGA?

2. Is one of these easier to communicate with?

a. If so, which one?

b. Are some methods of communication better than others for each one?

3. Can one of these beings/states of consciousness do things the other can't?

Thanks as always for Magic Monday.
