An excellent point! I've never been to Senninzawa, more's the pity, but everything I know about the sokushinbutsu points to their status as one of the last surviving examples of the pure ancient tradition; they left the cycle of incarnation for wholly unselfish reasons and did it the right way, by an extraordinary feat of self-discipline and spiritual power.
