Magic Monday

It's getting on for midnight, so we can proceed with a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism and I'll do my best to answer it. With certain exceptions, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question received after then will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted. I've been getting an increasing number of people trying to post after these are closed, so will have to draw a harder line than before.) If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 143,916th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.0 of The Magic Monday FAQ hereAlso: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.

The image?  That's the twenty-ninth card in The Sacred Geometry Oracle. Card 29, The Dodecahedron, when upright tells you that spiritual forces are involved in the situation; when reversed, it warns you that you will have to embrace personal change in order to deal with what's happening.. The sun in the upper left corner of the image tells you that this card belongs to the final third of the oracle, which corresponds to Nwyfre, the principle of spirit and meaning.  We've completed our passage through the first two of the basic root functions of sacred geometry -- √3, the principle of the vesica piscis and the equilateral triangle, and √2, the principle of the square and its diagonal -- and now we're working with the √5, the seed from which the Golden Section unfolds and resolves all back into unity.

I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use the button above to access my online tip jar. Bookshop logoI've also had quite a few people over the years ask me where they should buy my books, and here's the answer. Bookshop.org is an alternative online bookstore that supports local bookstores and authors, which a certain gargantuan corporation doesn't, and I now have a shop there, which you can check out here. Please consider patronizing it if you'd like to purchase any of my books online.

Was it perhaps the Dictionary of Alchemical Symbols? I don't remember if it was JMG, but I'm pretty sure I found it through a link someone shared here.

Meaning the Conservative SCOTUS justices intentionally took on these cases (which had been in the system for quite some time) with the express purpose of "energizing the Democratic base?" Sorry, but to me that doesn't pass the basic logical smell test. This conspiracy theory (yes, that's what it is) would imply those justices are secretly in cahoots with the Democrats.

Utter absurdity.

The main issue I see with this kind of conspiratorial thinking is that is massively overemphasizes the role of human agency and presupposes a unified will of "elites" who all share a hive mind and have the same exact agenda. This mentality begs for a universe where there are no gods, spirits, or cosmic intelligences, just "human elites" who fill that role.

Rather, I think what we're seeing now is a gradual shift in how the unseen forces are influencing our reality.

Hello,

I have a couple of questions I've been meaning to ask, and one new one:

1. Re the CGD elemental groves: I'm finding the god/dess/es of the groves sometimes come out to interact, and I would like to be able to read more about them. I haven't had much luck finding information about Belisama, and was wondering if you could recommend any sources, whether for her or the others.

2. I'm curious about the differences between sleep, losing consciousness, general anesthesia, & death / NDEs from the occult philosophy point of view. In particular, I remember the feeling of coming out of fainting & waking up from general anesthesia as just having a chunk of time missing completely, with no memory of existing during the intervening hour(s).

3. (Trigger Warning: child abuse) As I mentioned previously, I've started tapering my Prozac dosage. I did a second reduction on Friday, and within a day I was experiencing repeated flashbacks / intrusive memories of my childhood abuse. It feels sort of like recurring VR movies playing in the astral, in which I can choose whether to inhabit my childhood body. (I did a fair amount of "dissociating" from my body during the original abuse, staring at a particular curtain, for instance.) If I choose to inhabit myself in the memory, it seems to provide a way to feel, integrate, & process the sensations & emotions I had at the time, but I can only do so much of that at a time before being overwhelmed. And while the LBRP has been key to reducing the emotional energy coursing through the movies so that I can withstand the experience, I'm wondering if there's a way you can recommend to sort of "turn off" or further "dim" the intrusive memory movies so I have time to recover emotionally between processing sessions. I had an intuition that the beings in the astral sort-of "presenting" the movies were going through the motions without particularly wanting to continue, and I got some temporary relief by giving them permission to rest for a while. But I'm not sure if choosing to inhabit the movies every so often strengthens the tracks in space, so that I should avoid doing so despite the apparent benefits for emotional processing, or what exactly is a good course of action. I would appreciate any insight you might have into the whole thing. I have already been meditating on & doing some divination about what's going on, and it feels like this is a new stage in healing the trauma, and incidentally also the thing that I've been so terrified of in the apparent Watcher on the Threshold experiences I've been having.

Thanks as always for your writing and support,
Heather

Extra info for 3 that I forgot earlier, in case it's helpful: I have been keeping bowls of vinegar & of salt in the house, and wearing the basic protection amulet when I go out. And I've had to lay off the EOTCR because adding energy to my system was giving me the same issues as the LSRP/LIRP, which I now hypothesize is because that extra energy was increasing the emotional impact (by increasing the strength?) of the movie memories. Which I presume means I'm generating the movies with my own imagination / magic or something? (I'm pretty sure that trying not to think about them won't help, though.) This is all very new and strange to me, but obviously moving towards improvement in trauma healing & emotional balance.

Re: The German Gods are not the only ones

Fascinating. I feel drawn to both Germanic and Mesopotamian pantheons, on and off. Do you have any resources on Mesopotamian polytheism as how it's practiced today? I can't seem to find much of anything from the usual internet searches.

Secondly, it seems that Enlil has made an appearance as well. I recently read Damien Echols book on angelic magic and toward the end of the book he shares with readers his experience of a sudden theophany that came upon him like a ton of falling bricks one day after decades of intense work and invocations of every Hebraic angel entity under the sun. During a ritual, his perception completely gave way to nothing but the word "Enlil" being etched across his vision. He says he didn't even know who or what Enlil was at the time. After that experience and a rudimentary amount of research he says he began an intense devotional relationship with Enlil.

I do wonder if this means that Enlil might in fact be one of the actual Gods behind the "YHWH" moniker (I think there's at least four). And that the angels are Enlil's creations? Not much of a leap at all, considering that the Levantine God "El" might be the same as Enlil. And most of the angels have the suffix "-el" in their names. I have no way of knowing if there is any truth to this, but it's fascinating to contemplate nonetheless. And finally it lends more credence to the idea that Judaism might in fact be a product of a broader reform movement within the late Iron Age Mesopotamian religion, with the henotheistic cults of Assur, Marduk, and Su'en being antecedents to the Judean version.

I know someone who has been operating a temple of Inanna and Dumuzi for decades (not a building, but regular group rituals). I'm happy to hear that the Sumerian deities are getting more attention. I took a college class in Sumerian mythology, and one thing I got out of it was that the Sumerians had a sense of humor. The story about how Inanna got Enki drunk while they were gambling, cleaned him out of most of his authorities as a god, and then had to beat it back to her home city before he sobered up, is hilarious.

That's absolutely fascinating about the long barrows vs. the mound barrows! It aligns neatly with the little I know about archeological work on the barrows, chiefly from reading Aubrey Burl's books. (Burl does mention one fairly clear case of burial alive to protect a tribe, but it was found in Ireland and in connetion with a hill fort.)

Can you point me toward any other published work, whether presented as factual or written under the cover of fiction, that develops this idea more fully? Or it it mostly your own inferences from archeological findings?

To some degree, I think what is going on with the Germanic baby names is that after WWI it was socially unacceptable to giver babies the names of Heathen deities. WWII reinforced this. Few people who are old enough to remember the Second World War are still alive, so those names no longer stir the strong negative associations that they had for most people.

That said, I would never name a child Odin, or even a name that meant "son of" or "devotee of" Odin. That is too heavy a burden for a child to carry.

Film-series?

[personal profile] emily07 2022-07-04 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Neil Gaiman conceived American Gods in 2001 and it got to be an internet- filmchannel series in 2015, Odin is one of the main characters in that series, maybe that's involved as well?

Dito with the vikings series in the same channel? I think thats where the current topknots for men came from

In regards to 3., I commented rather snarkily to some friends that if Pres. Biden is the price for the recent Supreme Court decisions, I for one am satisfied with the deal.

Which got me thinking on the subject of blowback from the anti-Trump spells. Not necessarily causing the Supreme Court decisions, that seems to have some causality issues given how long the tenure of some Justices has been, but perhaps demoralizing the protestors so the leaked opinion and the actual decisions didn't lead to the sort of riots we all expected? Is that in line with what we might expect as blowback results from that sort of spell?

For the past few months I've been logging many hours studying old time rootwork. Prior to getting interested in folk magic, I have practiced ceremonial magic and am heavily informed by your writings on magical ethics. This has me wondering: one of the techniques for female domination is feeding a mate her menstrual blood. I've listened to some podcasts in which professional rootworkers assert that feeding a mate menstrual blood is very effective at tying his nature and keeping him true. That said, I'm also aware of some of the workings that release a tied nature --- i.e. urinating on a knife's blade in a river. Apparently when they dredge rivers in the South, they find thousands and thousands of rusted out knives.

This makes me wonder, what would the magical repercussions be for the woman who feeds her mate her menstrual blood? What is the er Raspberry Jam for using a personal concern in this way?

Not exactly a resource intended for modern practice, but The Treasures of Darkness by Thorkild Jacobsen is a history of Mesopotamian religion and includes some good translations of a lot of the religious poetry.

Pluto north to south

[personal profile] stcathalexandria 2022-07-04 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
JMG -

Finished your Pluto book and I'm wondering why the southern hemisphere countries are not as swept up in the Plutonian mindset of the last 100 years or so compared to the north. Lived in a developing country for several years and they were definitely more grounded and less moody compared to home in the U.S. Why wouldn't the discovery of Pluto affect both hemispheres similarly? Or this a case of we just don't have enough information on the changes across developing countries of the southern hemisphere?

Mazikeen

[personal profile] ritaer 2022-07-04 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Lucifer as the contemporary fictional character started out in Neil Gaiman's Sandman series. At one point Dream (the main character) has to go to Hell to free a former lover. He discovers that Lucifer is quitting--freeing all the condemned souls and demons and locking up. Mazikeen is a demon who is in love with and totally loyal to Lucifer and follows him to earth, where he proceeds to run a nightclub in Los Angeles (and gets his own comic series written by Mike Carey. Mazikeen is drawn with one side of her face normal and the other skeletal. Her words are difficult to decipher because of this. She wears a mask to conceal her condition from the customers. I suspect that those choosing the name for their children may not be familiar with the comic character, but only with the TV version. Both comics incorporate a great range of world mythology and occult lore ranging from Shinto to Norse to Miltonian. Lucifer's long-range quest in the Carey series is to establish his own branch of the universe, one with NO gods or other supernatural beings and in which humans are forbidden to worship. The television version is no more related to the written version than television usually is.

Early in the Sandman series a magical order is run by a character obviously patterned on Crowley--although, since Crowley is mentioned as a rival, we are obviously not intended to think of Burgess as a disguised version of Crowley.

Good morning JMG,

Thank you as always for your time and energy spent answering our questions.

1. The Five Tibetan Rites. After one week and starting slow all appears to be going well. I do them a few minutes after I finish SOP and meditation. Any concerns I should be aware of doing the practices so close together?

2. At this point in my development I am learning to let go of labeling my path as it is unclear quite where I fit. Mage, mystic, or occultist?

The DA is very satisfying to experience and may be one of the few things in my life so far I have been absolutely consistent with doing or practicing every day for an extended period. So lots of personal transformation happening and maybe I'll find some wisdom along the way.

I am neither averse to nor fascinated with power. Mostly, I see it as a very useful tool which I use as needed whether for internal work or external situations.

After reading Practical Mysticism by Underhill I can see strong mystical elements have been present in my life for quite some time.

Not sure how one would put all these together in the physical plane. For now I am going by feel as far as where to put my emphasis in my practices.

As one develops, do the paths act as balancing forces between themselves? Seems they have synergy with each other, too.

3. Divination is suggesting professional occultism as a viable option for me. With this in mind I am working on an affirmation.

"I find opportunities to make my living as a (professional occultist) where ever I look."

Still not sure about the "professional occultist" part. Maybe, cunning man, tarot reader, teacher, or does it just need to be close enough? Hm. Divination might be helpful here, too.
Do you have suggestions for changes in that or other parts of the affirmation?

Thanks again,
Eric

Do the long vs. round barrows actually have any significance/meaning in this, or is it pure coincidence that the habits changed around the same time? I.e. does form matter in this case?

PS: A very interesting discussion and explanations - thanks to everybody for asking, and to you, JMG, for your patient and detailed answers! :-)
