The illustration? An astrologer at work. I've begun studying financial astrology, using the writings of Walter Gorn Old (aka Sepharial) and David Williams as initial guides. Since my mundane astrology project has gone very well so far, with several hundred subscribers, I figure it's time to start expanding the range of things I know how to do, and I feel rather like the guy in the image -- well, except I don't wear a ruff.

It doesn't matter whether it's sectarian or otherwise, your intent and your level of consciousness between them determine what kind of response you get. Since you clearly got a response that told you the truth, you might want to continue praying, and ask for help dealing with the very real fear that this sort of experience can cause. There's a saying from the Bible, "The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom," and it's true -- not the end of wisdom, nor even the middle, but wisdom begins to dawn when it sinks in: "oh frack, these things are real and they're a lot bigger and smarter and stronger than I am..."

This all makes sense to me, thank you.

I partly wanted to ask because from my time dealing with the Watcher, and from all the MM's I've read, I'm just generally very, very, suspicious of anything that guides me away from magic -- which is something that's happened recently.

There can be good reason to set magic aside for a while. If you need to get your life on the material plane in order, or if you're better suited to some other kind of spiritual practice -- say, religious mysticism -- it's a valid choice.

Not the OP.

In my own meditations I've found myself wrestling with similar questions, and one of the things I wonder is if I'm better suited for a path closer to religious mysticism.

I find myself content with practicing the three pillars you put forth: meditation, divination, and the SOP. When you say "set magic aside," would that include practices like divination + the SOP, or are you imagining someone who is practicing something more advanced?

I had more advanced practices in mind. Basic protective rituals and divinations make a good fit with every Western spiritual practice.
