I think you're right -- it comes down to too many people not having the inner resources to construct an individual identity for themselves, so they take one off the shelf from some ideology or other, and then try to bully everyone else into accepting the same ideology because that's a way they can distract themselves from their own awareness that the ideological identity they've borrowed is false. Sartre talked about that at some length -- people adopt ideological identities in an attempt to be something the way a rock is a rock, and avoid the immense challenge of being an individual, with all the choice and freedom that's implied by that.
